Hii! Rubi here, and as a part of SWC (Scratch Writing Camp) I'm interviewing Abby (@AGJ4) on her writing process :) While she was interviewing me on my preferences in genre for writing (and reading), it was revealed that Abby enjoys writing in include fantasy, romance, realistic/home fiction, mystery, and more genres (these were the only genres that came up during our conversation, along with science fiction, which, according to Abby, was a little confusing as she "tried writing sci-fi but ended up getting lost in the plot".). As a proud owner of four cats, Abby's go-to for getting over writers' block is "going outside, walking around, playing with [her] cats. Basically just going to [her] happy place and waiting for something to come to [her]". Going out, moving around, and playing with (pets/friends/etc), is a really useful technique for overcoming writers' block, as walking around and clearing your head truly helps with getting the ideas unstuck. Besides, there's so many possibilities and opportunities for ideas to hit you when you're out seeing and doing and playing! Said four cats, according to Abby, are "a bit crazy"- which intrigued me, so I went on to ask about their personalities in the form of a fun topic to consider - "if your cats were main characters in a novel, what roles/character archetypes would they conform to?" "Precious would definitely be the villain," Abby replied (ooh Precious I wonder what you did /lighthearted), "and Sage would be her sidekick". After reflecting on their dispositions and behaviours, Abby concluded that the cat named Storm would "save the day", and "Dusk would be the wise mentor". While we were on the topic of fiction writing, I decided to randomly drop a moral dilemma- (yes I know they aren't really related but shhh) -if, say, a magic concoction had been invented that, after drinking, every piece of writing you created would be a masterpiece (regardless of effort, skill level, etc) and every writer around her was taking it and surpassing her in contests and charts in all directions... what would Abby do? "Honestly, I think I would just keep writing by myself, and trying to get to that level naturally. That would feel way too much like cheating." Was Abby's firm reply (with which I completely agree. I write for the sake of expressing myself and having fun, not being the best writer. Admittedly there would be pressure to follow, but in the end I think I'd stay potion-free.). Abby also added that she would not try to convince other writers to stop using it, and would "let others do what they wanted". Our conversation, other than these points, also discussed our reluctance to start thinking about college, and Abby's reflection on her writing style. "Honestly, I'm pretty generic," she admitted, "I'd love to be recognized for being descriptive, though, so I'm really working on that." After wrapping up with a few tips ("1. use all the senses one by one 2. use unusual descriptors and personification of objects/sounds/etc"), we thanked each other and said our goodbyes (for now :P) Okiee that's it, thanks for reading!
