"Goop isle is the bottom of a massive sinkhole located underneath of Floral isle known as the Goopen Grotto, isolated from the rest of the world for centuries where unique plant life evolved to live in the unique humid caverns below. The plants (and subsequently, every thing else) located in the slimy sanctuary are nourished by a highly viscous liquid that floods the lower areas. as you can picture, this goopy substance isn't very healthy to consume as it is riddled with microscopic lifeforms dwelling in it. Some of these critters have evolved to be parasitic, going as far as to take over the mind of some arpeggiacs to get them to try to swim in the goo and lay eggs in it. the eggs aren't technically theirs and are full of more of the parasite. the parasite often, however, makes the host swim miles away to make sure they aren't interrupted. the host is normally never seen for weeks until the find their way back. Slekos are known to try and stop the host from entering the goop not to protect them, but because they think the parasite tastes good."
