So Avery and Lucas are brother and sister but growing up they had a bad father. Their mother was promised to their dad from a young age which is why she didn't/couldn't leave. Avery took the most damage between her and Lucas because her father didn't want a second child. Avery was left with a bunch of scarring on her as she grew up. Her and Lucas learned how to cover things up and pretend like it was normal because that's what their mother did.
