Instructions

The rain pelted down on us for hours before the sky turned dark and the rain faded to a constant drizzle. The world seemed so calm, resting under the stars and hearing the calming noises of crashing waves and the scent of the salty ocean 200 feet away. We had decided to take watching shifts, and it was my turn. Kestrel was leaning against me, deep in sleep as I watched the dead silent neighborhood. I especially kept my eyes locked on the house, waiting for the yellow lights to turn off and the pacing shadow of my brother to sleep. I checked my watch; its dull screen displaying 14:26. I rubbed my eyes, trying to rub the sleep off and give Kestrel a bit more time to rest. We would both need it if we were on the run...From our "brother". Calling him that made me sick and made my stomach churn. He wasn't a true sibling to me. I finally decided to shake Kestrel's shadowy figure. She awoke quickly and looked around warily before checking the watch strapped around her wrist. "We need to run," I whispered. "He's eventually going to find us, and nobody's around right now. We need to go," I added, raising my voice slightly. Kestrel nodded and got up quickly. I trailed behind her as she walked between one of the homes and onto the beach. The tail John had ripped up was still clutched in her hands as we walked silently along the beach. Kestrel, I put my hand in my pocket, hoping to warm them when I felt a thin, smooth object. My phone! I hadn't forgotten it back at home. I quickly opened it and searched for places around the area and places that we could hide at. I found just about nothing helpful and sighed. "Kestrel, where are we going?" I called out to her, just then realizing how far behind I was now. Wherever we were going, I hoped I wouldn't ever have to see our "Brother" again.
