A century ago, dragons appeared. No one knows where they came from, if they soared from the clouds, or appeared from the sea and volcanoes, all they know is that they changed everything. There was only one continent, and they were thriving. Large, modern cities. Children obsessed with Tiktok and Fortnite, and phones. But then they appeared, and the continent split in two. Dragons. Hundreds of them, soaring overhead. On one continent, humans mutated into beings who could control and talk to dragons. Dragonbound. The Dragonbound continent fell into chaos, those not Dragonbound struggling to survive and the Dragon whispering humans rising to power. Fael, the other continent, went on like normal. As if nothing had happened. But then something did happen, twenty years later. It’s not that abilities suddenly appeared. It’s that the dragons awakened something deep inside the humans of Fael. A long dormant power. The Curse of the Dragons. It’s not so much a curse as an awakening. Each human has a unique power, none the same as another. It could be anything. Some are cursed powers that can never be controlled. Some are simple but useful for everyday life. Others are useful for making faraway dreams come true, like flying without airplanes, or breathing underwater. While rarely, some are godlike. Godlike abilities never last long. They eventually burn up the human after a few years. The childrens’ deaths? Most of the time it’s those abilities. And a hundred years later, those abilities are just a part of society. There are rules for their use, and life continued on as normal. The continent split and the ability-awakening set the humans of Fael back a hundred years, but they’ve finally caught up. Whereas Dragonbound has gone back to ruins and people just trying to get their next meal.
