Jackal’s closest friend as a child committed suicide, so he became vulnerable to human emotions, because he suffered high emotional strain. To fix this, the General took him to ‘re-strengthen’ his mental strength and physical tolerance. His goal was basically turn him into an unfeeling sociopath like the rest of the species. This entailed constant torture and ‘mental tests’. And as this abuse continued, Jackal began to deteriorate. Nevertheless, the General refused to give up, because what Jackal had done before had shown prodigy levels to the Existence, the organization of his kind. He believed that if he could remake Jackal, that he would become the strongest Assassin in history, and he would receive all the glory because he trained Jackal. Jackal was on the brink of death when he finally escaped the Existence. Because of the “Take part or perish” policy, the Existence employed the highest trained Assassins to kill him. Jackal managed to outrun them to the Scorched Desert, where he still resides.
