The state-owned ENCASA (more commonly known as Grifo), accustomed to manufacturing trucks and busses, was given a secondary, radical goal: build the best sports car the world had ever seen. Uncompromised, overengineered and prohibitively expensive, the resulting Tramontana was a show of force of the national industry. Its light body and powerful engines meant it could (and would) go toe to toe with the best of them... And eventually outrun them. With speeds soaring past 150mph, the Tramontana was crowned the fastest production car of its day. This winning formula also proved successful in the world of sports car racing, where it claimed many victories and pole positions during its run. Today these machines are very scarce and commonly seen in museums and Concours events.
