To the person laughing at someone's death, You keep calling it "just a joke." Funny how "just a joke" is always the excuse people reach for when they don't want to admit they were cruel. You laughed at a human being who no longer has the chance to laugh back. You laughed at people who wake up every morning wishing they could hear that person's voice one more time. You laughed at grief. And then you expect everyone else to clap because you're "edgy?" No. You're not edgy. You're not bold. You're not some fearless truth-teller who isn't afraid to offend people. You're someone who mistook a complete lack of empathy for a personality. There's a difference between dark humor and being heartless. Dark humor can make people laugh with pain. What you did was laugh at someone else's pain. You don't become interesting by proving you can say the worst thing in the room. Anyone can do that. A toddler can throw a tantrum. It doesn't make them profound. What amazes me isn't even what you said. It's the confidence you had while saying it—as if you genuinely believed everyone else would think, "Wow, that's hilarious," instead of, "Wow... that's pathetic." You had an opportunity to be decent. You chose to be cruel. You had an opportunity to stay silent. You chose to make someone's worst day even worse. You had an opportunity to act like a human being. You failed. Maybe one day you'll understand what it's like to lose someone you love. I don't wish that pain on you. I just hope you never make someone else's grief heavier than it already is ever again. Because at the end of the day, the person who died isn't embarrassed. You should be.
