Today is a very sad day for dinosaur fans. On July 13, 2026, the actor Sam Neill unexpectedly passed away at the age of 78. He played many roles, but his most beloved and well-known was the role of Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park. This movie is what first sparked a love of dinosaurs and paleontology in me and many, many others. Of course, the dinosaurs in the movie played a major part in this, but so did Alan Grant, the paleontologist. Dr. Grant is only a fictional character, but Sam Neill brought him to life. He was perfectly cast and perfectly acted. The awe on Dr. Grant's face when he first sees dinosaurs sends those same feelings of wonder to everyone watching. This feeling is something that later Jurassic movies just haven't quite been able to replicate. He was truly special and talented to tug at the emotions of so many people and create such a memorable scene. While Alan Grant will never die, it feels like a part of him has. The movies will always be timeless classics, but they won't feel quite the same now. Sam Neill is the true Alan Grant. He is the image of what people think of when they hear "paleontologist". He has played a huge part in my childhood, my love for paleontology, and who I aspire to be. This is truly a devastating loss, and Sam will be missed very much. I have drawn Alan Grant with his favorite dinosaur, a Triceratops. Maybe now they can finally meet.
