Instructions

We finally reached where the ferry docked after hours of walking. It was 10:00 am now, and the sun was shining brightly. The rain hadn't quite stopped yet, but it had slowed substantially. Kestrel and I had our tickets to the ferry clutched in our hands, as we watched Seagulls swoop around and pluck stray French fries off the ground. My hands were trembling; what were we about to do? Kestrel had finally clipped the half-ripped tail back onto her cargo pants, still holding onto it with a strong grip. Her soft voice started to sing a lullaby, one that she'd always sing to me so I'd fall asleep. "Sit beside a mountain stream" "See her waters rise" Kestrel sang softly as I closed my tired eyes. It brought me back to the cabin, my home. We were so far away. "Listen to the pretty sound of music" Kestrel sang the next line; it had always been my favorite. Not long after that line, I would always fall asleep. "As she flies" I sang along, quietly. I had never had a great singing voice, but Kestrel's and my voice always made a beautiful harmony. "Find me in my field of grass" Kestrel's shaky voice sang; she'd always had a sorrowful singing voice, but it was also warm and brought comfort. "Mother Nature's son" She finished, ending abruptly as the sound of a blaring horn cut her off. The ferry had arrived; not many people were aboard. It was pretty early, so there wasn't much of a crowd waiting to get aboard. Kestrel and I rose from the bench we had been sitting on and waited for the ferry to unload everything. This was our last chance to turn back. But we kept going.. "Find me in my field of grass"
