about the song: Harold Arlen wrote the music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg wrote the lyrics for this back in 1939 for The Wizard of Oz, where it was famously introduced by Judy Garland. Believe it or not, MGM executives almost cut the song from the movie entirely! They thought it slowed down the pacing of the film and that singing a ballad in a dusty barnyard didn't fit, but thankfully the creative team fought hard to keep it in. It went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song and turned into one of the most covered and beloved melodies of the 20th century. This is my take on it for the tenor sax!
