── ⋅ ── Hybrids Hybrid cats are the offspring of parents from two different clans. While uncommon, they are a natural part of Eldritch and can lead to unique stories, appearances, and adaptations. Every hybrid is different, inheriting a blend of traits from both bloodlines. That said, not every combination is possible. ── ⋅ ── What Is a Hybrid? A hybrid is any cat born to parents from two separate clans. Some hybrids are the result of forbidden relationships, while others may come from peaceful unions, political alliances, or extraordinary circumstances. Regardless of their origins, hybrids are still cats first, and each one has their own place in Eldritch. ── ⋅ ── Viable Pairings Most clan combinations are biologically compatible and are capable of producing healthy offspring. However... Ashclan x Deltaclan ^^ *This pairing is not biologically viable. The adaptations of the two clans are simply too different. Ashclan cats are built for extreme heat, volcanic terrain, and dry conditions, while Deltaclan cats are adapted for cool rivers, prolonged swimming, and constant moisture. Because of these opposing adaptations, kittens conceived between an Ashclan and Deltaclan parent are unable to develop properly and do not survive after birth. This is a natural limitation of Eldritch, not a punishment, nor something caused by the deities. All other clan pairings are considered possible unless future lore states otherwise. ── ⋅ ── Inherited Adaptations Hybrids inherit a mixture of their parents' adaptations. They do NOT receive every adaptation from both clans. Instead, they inherit a balanced combination that makes sense biologically. For example: • A Groveclan × Highclan cat may inherit thick climbing claws and excellent balance, but not every adaptation from both clans. • A Deltaclan × Groveclan cat might possess webbed paws and a third eyelid alongside a heavier, sturdier frame. • A Highclan × Ashclan hybrid could have hollow bones and exceptional heat tolerance, but lack the full endurance of either parent. ── ⋅ ── Appearance Hybrids often visually resemble one parent more than the other, though many display obvious characteristics from both. No two hybrids should look exactly alike. Examples include: • Mixed coat colors or patterns • Ear shape from one parent • Tail shape from the other • A body build somewhere between both clans • Blended facial features ── ⋅ ── Blessings Hybrid cats receive one blessing from either clan type, NOT two. The blessing they receive depends solely on luck like anyone else, but they are different due to the fact they carry many more options. Hybrids do not possess multiple elemental blessings. It is also common for hybrids to not gain any blessing at all. ── ⋅ ── Strengths and Trade-Offs Hybrids should always feel balanced. They may gain useful traits from both parents, but they should also inherit limitations. For example: • A lighter build may sacrifice raw strength. • Better swimming may come at the cost of climbing ability. • Greater endurance in one environment may reduce efficiency in another. Hybrids are not stronger than pure clan cats. They are simply different. ── ⋅ ── Designing a Hybrid Kit When creating a hybrid kit for your cross-clan litter, ask yourself: ✦ Which parent will they resemble more? ✦ Which adaptations were inherited? ✦ Which traits were not passed down? ✦ How do those adaptations affect everyday life? ✦ Does their heritage influence their personality or goals? Remember that a hybrid is more than their appearance. Their upbringing, experiences, and choices will always define them more than their bloodline. ── ⋅ ── Final Notes • A hybrid is not meant to be "the best of two clans." • Hybrids are uncommon, but not unheard of. • Every hybrid should have a balanced blend of inherited traits. • Deltaclan x Ashclan pairings are not biologically viable and cannot produce living kittens. • A hybrid will only receive one blessing or no blessing.
