The passes to the Khalkud heartland have been fortified. These forts are between 3 to 6 layers of the following layout. The first layer has a deep ditch, the sides are greased with fat and oil making climbing out difficult, their also filled with random sharp objects, the ditch is covered in a thin layer of branches and leaves disguising it. The first layer also has an earthwork with a wooden front so shots at it will cause splinters to fly into the attackers, they are also covered in triangular nails (all sides sharpened) to make climbing them very painful. There are no men on the first earthwork, this is to give the illusion that while hard, these passes are possible to fight through, and maybe even trick enemy troops into thinking their unguarded but then they fall straight into the next ditch…The second layer’s ditch is a lot steeper and also greased, by now enemy troops will be exhausted by the climbing, with the close combat enemy rifle’s range advantage is nullified, our bows and our rifles are just as effective, and the shots from the enemy rifles will simply cause the wood to splinter into their faces. This second layer is also manned by our spearmen who finish off anyone who managed to climb the earthworks. There is also a small gap in the stakes, any troops who fall for the bate will now be stuck in a tight choke point and be easy targets for our spearmen. If the second layer does somehow fall the troops from the 2nd layer are left to fight to the death, having no real way of escaping, this should hold the enemy troops in place making them easy targets for our riflemen and bowmen, even if it costs us lots of troops, this is an emergency situation. Once the 2nd layer has been eradicated the enemy will have to cross the 3rd trench, the deepest and also widest. Here our troops will rain hell down firing arrows, shooting our rifles and throwing simple grenades. If the enemy somehow crosses the 3rd layer enough time has passed for the royal army to arrive and finish off the exhausted enemy.
The bridges are all just wooden pallets which are pulled up before an attack even begins. This feels like something that should be in both the main studio and metagame
