Sharks are not threats to humans (or any other animals besides marine life) because we are not part of their natural diet. Humans are far more dangerous to them. The vast majority of the over 500 shark species are completely harmless, meaning they are only threats towards marine animals. Also, shark attacks and bites on divers are extremely rare. In fact, divers around the world safely encounter sharks every five to eight days. When rare bites do occur, experts note they are almost always a case of mistaken identity or investigative curiosity.
