I didn’t get much sleep the night before. I was thinking about that afternoon with Max. I can tell you, “What were you thinking?!” came up a LOT… I got out of bed eventually, wondering how that day would go. Or if it had all been a dream. That started flooding my mind the moment I thought it. (Italics) Would he even come up to me? Was he even there at all?! (End italics) I couldn’t get my answer until I got there. I was going to start using one of my beaten-up notebooks for my science class so I could communicate. I shoved it into my small, red backpack, along with my other supplies. I grabbed breakfast and my lunch for later and bolted out the door. I had to know for sure. ~ ~ ~ I was thinking mostly about the same things on the walk to school. I was about as nervous as I had been the day before. Wishing I could wait for everyone to go in before me to avoid contact… And, this time, hoping I’d see Max outside. Maybe waiting for me… (italics) Oh, well… Just get it over with… (end italics) The first few periods were…again what you’d expect… We either started actually working or just doing random icebreakers. And then lunch came. Lunch the day before had been…okay, actually. We weren’t required to eat in the cafeteria or the school, even, so long as we were back by the end or we’d be forced to stay inside. I had gone to a window ledge in one of the classrooms to eat there. And I ate in silence. It was actually pretty peaceful… No one bothering you for anything… Just peace and quiet. A bit lonely, but better than being alone in a crowded cafeteria… I pretty much expected the same that day. I didn’t have a class with Max until seventh period (I had checked: he had at least been there that day), so I couldn’t know for sure if we had really talked or not… But something happened. By some stroke of luck, he must have seen me in the hallway or something. And the next thing I knew, I could hear a knock on the wall by the open door to the near-empty classroom. And, there he was. “Hey, Emma! You mind if I sit with you?” he said softly. I went to my backpack to grab my notebook and started writing. “Yes.” I wrote in a rush…and then quickly retracted… “Sorry! I meant, “Not at all!” I was suddenly shaking again. “Oh, it’s okay! Thank you.” He walked over to sit on the ledge with me as I slid my things over to make room. I was relieved that yesterday had actually happened…and felt stupid for thinking it might not have… We didn’t really say much after that… Just eating in silence… But, this time…it felt oddly better. Like the difference between a hot day with no clouds and the same day with a few. You wouldn’t think it would make much of a difference, but it does. Not much, but you can tell… Time flew by in that moment, and before I knew it, it was time to head to class. An announcement went on from the speakers on the ceiling: “Students, you have 5 minutes remaining. Please clean up your lunch, return any trays, and head to class as quickly as possible. Thank you.” {I had to split it between the instructions and notes and credits}
“We should head back.” Max said. I was suddenly disappointed. I wasn’t sure why, but I had started to grow comfortable and happy in the cold silence. I had fun, oddly enough. “Thank you for sitting with me.” I wrote, nervously. “Oh, no problem.” he said. “So, I’ll see you in a couple of hours?” I wrote. “Yep. See you then!” he said with a smile. I nodded slightly. I was glad to have a friend who at least knew some of what I was dealing with. ~ ~ ~ When we did get to seventh period, I was nervous, but also kind of excited. There wasn’t much out of the ordinary — just random science activities that they make us do. I was having to use the same notebook I used to speak to write notes down, so I was writing pretty small. My pencil kept going off the edge of the paper. I was trying not to make a big deal of it, but Max seemed worried. “Hey, Emma?” he whispered. I jumped a little. “Yes?” I wrote in one of my back pages. He opened his backpack and started looking for something. He eventually pulled out a small packet-sized notebook with a red cover and a pen and pen loop. He slid it towards me. I was rather surprised. I was shaking a bit. “You’re giving this to me?” I wrote. “I figured you needed something else to write in.” he said. I slowly took it off his desk. I flipped over couple pages (I wanted to write everything I had wrote before on the new notebook) and started writing. “Thank you,” I wrote. I was shaking a bit more now. “Oh, it was nothing! Happy to help!” he said. I tried to pay attention to the teacher for the rest of class, but I was lost in thought again. (italics) My notebook… (end italics) I could see Max smiling out of the corner of my eye. Maybe this year wouldn’t be so bad after all…
