It's not very story pretty or cinematic.. but that's okay! INTRO Demons... what are they? Monsters that ravage the land and people, committing acts of cruelty without a drop of remorse in their eyes. ...why would anyone even do such a thing? MYTH + CREATION In the ancient times, Verdalith was inhabited by many high races of angels, sirens, nymphs, elves, and humans. One man outcast, poor, weak... but five beings of the higher races took pity on him, and gave him an able body, blooming farmland, dreams, and magic. Yet the greed of the man took him over, determined and crazed for more. He turned on the five, taking everything from them as if it was his own right, leaving them broken and bloodied. With his new found majesty he turned on the people as well. Yet laying in the ashes, revenge stirred in the hearts of the five. In one final push they found the man, and took back what was theirs, erasing him completely. “I take your body, mind, vitality, spell, and home…” With their final strength, they cursed this sin. Their hunger and power would live on for eternity, from one person to the next, rearing its merciless head when things were imbalanced. To this day few wish to accept the knowledge that demons were victims, and most have changed the history and myths. This however is their true origin. MECHANISM + SCIENCE There are always five demons in the world, and if one is killed, their power passes on to another. Compared to the more angelic or celestial possession and reincarnation, demon power transfer does not replace the host's consciousness or take over the body. It is passed on almost as a blessing or gift, for the wielder to shape as they please. A demon's power is embedded on a chromosome: Chromosome Zero. It is the largest chromosome, and the 24th in the humanoid karyotype. At birth all genes are turned off, and the person lives as normal. High levels of intimate stress or trauma can start turning these genes on- giving the being a Hunger, Abilities, and an alternate Form. These abilities depend on which demon this chromosome is from, and the location and biology of the person. Chromosome Zero is highly prone to mutation and has multiple copies of genes, allowing its host to tailor the power to their need. A hunger originates from the original five demons, usually tied to harm or pain for victims. Demons are freed to devour by losing feelings such as remorse or empathy- they can still distinguish what is right and wrong but have no emotional repercussion. DEMON TYPES Azkorra . of the Heart - Awaking from massacre or physical trauma, demons of the Heart crave the flesh, blood, and fever of being an executioner. - Azkorra's current vessel of hunger is Kai. Iridelle . of the Nightmare - Induced from psychological neglect or abuse, demons associated with the Nightmare consume the dreams, psyche, and mental suffering of victims. Rosavoth . of the Wraith - Born from death or exploitation of life, the Wraiths gain strength from the life force or energy of others. Mythrael . of the Hex - Created from having their power and/or magic stripped from them, demons that follow the Hex devour the magic from their prey. Veteia . of the Famine - From a displacement of home or life, the demons of the Famine seek to drain the land and starve the victims of the life and resources around them.
