This is a portrait of my favorite Irish folk singer, Anthony Kearns.<< ♥️ The song, Grace, and is based on a true story: On Easter Monday, 1916, an armed rebellion began in Ireland to overthrow British rule. At the time, Ireland was still a part of Britain. Joseph Plunkett, from whose perspective the song was later written, was one of the uprising's main leaders. He was an Irish nationalist, and was very sick at the time. Grace Gifford was his fiancee. The Easter Rising was subdued, and Joseph Plunkett was one of the 15 men sentenced to death by firing squad. Before his execution, was granted permission to marry Grace in the chapel inside Kilmainham Gaol (Jail). They were given just ten minutes to spend together before saying goodbye forever. The brutal executions were one of the factors that led the Irish people to rally around their remaining leaders, and Ireland finally gained official independence as a country in 1949.
