July 31, 2026 Dear Diary, I don't even know how to describe what happened today. I'm still trying to convince myself it was real. This afternoon I went outside to get some fresh air. I wasn't really thinking about anything. I just needed to clear my head. Then I saw someone sitting on a bench across the street. At first I couldn't tell who it was. But when she looked up... It was Mom. She was crying. Not just wiping away a few tears. She was sobbing. I'd never seen her like that before. For a second, I just stood there. Then I ran to her. "Mom?" She looked at me, and her eyes went wide. "Aria..." Before I could say anything else, she pulled me into the tightest hug I've ever felt. She cried into my shoulder, saying over and over, "I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry." I didn't understand. I thought she didn't want me anymore. When she finally calmed down enough to speak, her voice was shaking. "I never wanted to be mean to you," she whispered. "I never stopped loving you." I stared at her. "Then... why?" I asked. She looked away for a long moment before answering. "Your father has been supporting us financially since the divorce," she said quietly. "Without that money, I don't know how we would've kept this house or paid our bills." My heart sank. She continued, tears filling her eyes again. "He started making demands. He told me that if I wanted his financial help to continue, I had to push you away. He wanted you to believe I didn't care about you." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "I fought with him," she said. "I begged him to stop. But every time I refused, he threatened to cut us off." She covered her face with her hands. "I thought I was protecting our future. I kept telling myself that someday I'd explain everything to you. But every time I saw how much I was hurting you... I hated myself." I didn't know what to say. Part of me wanted to believe every word. Another part of me couldn't understand how anyone could ask a mother to do something like that. "I thought you hated me," I whispered. She shook her head so hard it almost hurt to watch. "Never," she cried. "Not for one second." For the first time in what felt like forever, she looked at me with the warmth I'd been searching for. The warmth I'd missed. The warmth I'd hoped was still there. I don't know what the whole truth is yet. I don't know if there are pieces I'm still missing. But seeing her cry... Hearing her say she loves me... It changed something inside me. Maybe this isn't the end of our story after all. Maybe it's the beginning of finding the truth. ā Aria
