Some facts about the Saint Luca Racer: Fewer than 20 to 50 individuals survive in the wild, confined entirely to Maria Major, a protected nine-hectare nature reserve islet. Once common on the mainland of Saint Lucia, the snake was decimated and thought to be extinct following the introduction of invasive Asian mongooses in the late 19th century, thought lost for decades, a single specimen was found on Maria Major in 1973, confirming the species still clung to survival. The Saint Lucia racer is completely non-venomous and poses no threat to humans. Adults grow up to roughly 123.5 centimeters (48.6 inches) in length, featuring variable patterns of pale gray, light brown, or dark markings and stripes that offer camouflage in scrub and rocky terrain. Despite the having word "racer" in their name, they do not move fast instead, they act as ambush predators that wait quietly to catch lizards and small vertebrates
