It is pretty self-explanatory. The gaps that look to small for cats, but are entrances to dens, actually have sheets of metal that got peeled back and are covering half of the hole. (Like the Elders den.)
BTW, pretend the people aren't there. and the graffiti is from when the ship was still in harbor, where it came from.
