Jane was built in 1903 as the first of Harlton Industrial’s C class, the older of the much more successful C1 class. Jane was originally built as a 0-4-0 Wing tank, she was the first of her kind. Jane, was not a nice engine to work on. Her wing tanks were painfully good at covering up the boiler, making repairs a living nightmare to her smokebox. In 1913 Jane would under go a conversion to becoming a well tank. She would continue her working years as this, until being withdrawn in the 1930’s, being put in the depot as a stationary boiler, before getting replaced from this duty by a electric generator, and being put on for sale in the 1970’s, and was bought by a group of railway enthusiasts, who over the course of 5 years rebuilt the engine into something very much unique. Unlike it’s sibling, (sprocket) Jane is not a tender tank locomotive, she is infact a geared tender engine. During the 70’s she underwent a conversion from a well tank to a tender locomotive, in the process acquiring brass fittings, a full on cab, tender and a full on coat of scarlet paint. Jane was restored and operated from the 70’s onwards by the HSGLT (Harlton Geared Steam Locomotive Trust) which loan her to several other railways, and running her on weekends on their estatew, with 2 bogie coaches and will continue to run for decades more.
