The rain poured down on my head as hot tears streamed down my cheek. The shadows seemed to dance around the flickering firelight. Dakota was gone, long gone. He had left us with a fire, that was not growing dim. Kestrel slept, leaning on my achy shoulder. Smoke swirled around me. The wood crackled. In the moment I had no hope, nothing. I wiped the tears from my eyes, sniffled a little bit, than tried to sleep. The morning wasn't any better than the night, police officers had swarmed the camp grounds in search for us. I squeezed Kestrel tight. We were hiding in the bathroom of someone's camper, it had already been searched so we supposed it'd be safe. My stomach rumbled at the sight of all the fresh fruit lying out of the counter almost begging for me to dig in. But I resisted the urge. By the time police had died down, it was noon and the day was growing colder. Dakota had brought us here, to his little shack out near the campgrounds. It didn't have bed, but it had cans of food that looked like they were radioactive. As we curled up in the shack we listened in to conversations around. One that I caught sent a shiver up my spine... A hurricane was set to hit the Outer Banks straight on in 3 days. We needed to go. Quick.
