( old tut btw ) ## How to Shade Hair 1. Sketch the hair. 2. Apply the base color of the hair. 3. Determine the light source: Draw an arrow to indicate where the light is coming from so you can locate the shadows. There is no strict "rule" for this; everyone has their own style. 4. Add darker shadows:Apply a shade darker than your base shadow to the hair strands that fall in the shade and areas furthest from the light source. An important note:The area furthest from the light source isn't completely pitch black; there is still some light there. (For example, if you look at sphere shading, you'll notice a subtle ambient light at the furthest point). 5. Blend softly:Do a soft blend of the colors by picking a transitional shade that lies between the two tones. 6. More blending lol :) 7.Add a complementary color: Introduce a contrasting color to the base color in areas you see fit—mostly in the dark areas. For instance, pair orange with blue, or pink with green, etc. However, make sure it matches the same saturation and value (this is why studying color theory is essential). 8.Airbrush the skin tone: Using an airbrush, softly apply the skin color to the parts of the hair closest to the face. This creates a beautiful effect where the skin seems to "reflect" onto the hair! 9.Add highlights: On an "Add" layer, take the original hair color and use the airbrush to color the side facing the light source. Then, lower the layer's opacity until it looks right to you. 10.Merge all layers: Finally, merge everything! Of course, this is just the shading part; I haven't finished the rendering process yet because I'm lazy, and that is a whole different story! Important Notes: Section the hair: Break the hair down into sections. Don't draw it as a single solid block, as this will make it look more "cartoonish." Naturally, you need to understand how hair actually flows and master its fundamentals. Use soft brushes: Opt for soft brushes like a fade pen, airbrush, etc., and avoid using hard brushes. Traditional art disclaimer: I'm not sure if this method works well for traditional/paper drawing since I don't use it myself. I hope this tutorial was helpful! (「`・ω・)「
not mine but a good friend made this! sadly she's not on scratch anymore but yeah!
