Use with credit Here’s another new thing we’re doing monthly, an Aircraft Highlight! Our very first Aircraft of the Month is our Lockheed L-1049H Super Constellation! This aircraft was the second aircraft in the collection of what would become the LSAM, becoming part of the newly formed ‘Heritage Collection’ in 1958, along with a DC-3 (which will be featured when its repaint is completed). Obviously, this was still a new aircraft at the time, being delivered on February 1, 1957. Due to this, it would only reside in the Collection hangar for maintenance. When it was retired in 1970, it became the last Super Connie in US revenue service, and finally properly joined the now World Globe Air Museum collection. This aircraft is a really good workhorse for museum operations, transporting parts needed for the restoration and maintenance of aircraft. Thanks to its Combi configuration, it can be used not only for cargo, but for passenger flights as well, either for rides, or relief flights, which we haven’t really done with the Connie in a while. Fun fact: It has actually only been repainted twice in its life. The first time was to the previous livery it was in, with the blue bottom and black text. This was done in 1965, along with many other aircraft during this time, and was re-registered N49WG. This livery was very short lived, lasting from 1964-1970, when we switched to the livery seen on the L-1011. The second time was late 2025, when we returned it to its original as-delivered colors, and gave its original registration back. Thanks for checking out this first edition of Aircraft of the Month!
