Questions by @duckbills Answered by: me Q1: Why did choose to do band? A: i had to pick between doing band orchestra or choir when i was in 6th grade and band seemed like the most enticing of those 3, mainly because i thought orchestra was for nerds and choir was for bums Q2: What instrument(s) do you play? A: im in percussion (tuffest section), so like any perc instrument ever although during marching season i mainly play marching snare drum (im snare 3 out of 4 lol) Q3: Craziest thing your band Director has done? A: heres the “craziest” thing each of our main directors has done… head director: saying “guys i know its wet but this is no excuse to not be performing to your fullest right now we need to be getting reps in” whilst we rehearsed on the field meanwhile there was actively a torrential rainstorm happening assistant dir. 1: be the SCV movement caption head assistant dir. 2: saying “the way you guys are playing that right now makes me want to hurt myself,” and also saying “you’re a lot uglier than your brother! you must’ve gotten the bad genes…” to a kid in band perc director: throw stuff at us when he gets mad (then he comes in later and gets mad saying “WHY IS THIS ROOM SUCH A MESS! WHO THREW THIS CRAP ALL OVER THE FLOOR!” lmao) colorguard dir.: idk i cant think of a good one Q4: Is your band class big, small, or average? A: id say its kinda small for a texas 6a band but ik some people think its really big so idk lol (for reference it has about 170 people) Q5: Do you wish you could play another instrument than what you have already played? A: it depends on my mood lol though usually im pretty happy with playing percussion. however, ive always liked the idea of playing mellophone instead, i think its the coolest instrument ever Q6: What section has the least amount of students? A: the smallest marching section is low reeds (10 players) and the smallest concert section is probably double reeds with about…6? though if u include subsections its contrabass clarinet, we only have 1 lol Q7: How many years have you played your instrument? A: 6 years :,) Q8: What was your favorite piece of music you ever played? A: firefly by nathan daughtrey, its straight heat and incredibly fun to play Q9: Have you ever damaged your instrument? A: i like to think that im a pretty cautious person but somehow despite that ive managed to puncture a marching bass drum head twice sobs. the first time it happened i accidentally dropped it ON to its stand and that thing went right through the drum, the second time it happened the foam part of my mallet broke off and i didnt realize for a bit so i just kept playing and unbeknownst to me i had crazy holes in my head lmao Q10: How long do you practice your instrument? A: i always try to practice for an hour a day (outside of rehearsals) and hold myself accountable to that though some days its more like 30 minutes and some days its more like 4 hours lol Q11: What do you hate about your instrument? A: the pressure and some of the people in my section Q12: Are you beginning, intermediate, or advanced in your opinion? A: i suppose intermediate but im still just beginning in a lottt of ways. i feel like youre always kinda a beginner at your instrument until youre well into college at least, theres just so much to learn Q13: What section is the most annoying? A: definitely colorguard, at my school at least, i just cant stand the like. colorguard personality Q14: Worst part about being a band kid? A: really stressful at times, also the stench Q15: How often do you do performances/concerts? A: abt twice a week during marching season n like once a month during concert season Q16: Have you ever messed up during a performance? A: yes absolutely and if anyone says they havent theyre lying lol Q17: Has your band director ever called you out for making a mistake? A: yes, ive even gotten personally called out from the box a few times now, however i really dont see that as an inherently bad thing, directors are there to help you improve and as long as youre actually trying to apply the feedback given then theres no reason to feel ashamed about receiving it Q18: What section always mess up on their part? A: bass drums… Q19: Favorite scale? A: Eb minor Q20: Last question! Does your band do any activities during class time? A: nah not really, although the day after uil state marching contest we usually get a day off in class as long as the band hall is clean n stuff, buttt yeah other than that we js play or work on drill sets for all of class BONUS: Did you enjoy this? Tell me what you think! A: yes! i would be so down to do another band kid survey if u make one
