◣ The history of the SS normandie ◢ spans a brief but glorious decade, beginning with her construction in 1931 at the Penhoët shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Engineered to showcase French industrial supremacy, she featured a revolutionary hydrodynamic hull and a stunning Art Deco superstructure, finally launching in 1932 and entering service in 1935 to capture the prestigious Blue Riband for speed. Her career as the world's most glamorous transatlantic liner was abruptly halted in 1939 by World War II, when she sought refuge at Pier 88 in New York City. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the U.S. Navy seized the vessel, renaming her the USS Lafayette, and began converting her into a massive troopship. The legendary liner met her tragic end on February 9, 1942, when a spark from a worker's cutting torch ignited a stack of life preservers on the promenade deck. The fire spread rapidly, and the immense volume of water pumped aboard by firefighters made the ship top-heavy, causing her to capsize and sink into the Hudson River mud at her berth.
