CH 13 Sophie “Ugh. Still not getting used to that,” Percy muttered, leaning against Annabeth as the group light leaped back to Havenfield. “Careful, Waterboy,” Keefe said, grinning. “If you dissolve now, Foster’s going to run out of eyelashes.” Ignoring Keefe, Sophie turned to Percy. “Don’t worry, light leaping is always annoying the first few times," she said, smiling apologetically. She still remembered when Fitz had first light leaped her, although she had been a bit more concerned with the fact that she was being teleported by a stranger at the time. “It’ll get better eventually.” “Hopefully we don’t /get/ to eventually,” Annabeth reminded them, “I don’t know about you all, but I want to be done with this whole Peírama business as soon as possible.” “The blonde girl is right,” said a squeaky voice from behind them. “This is too dangerous. You're allowed to fight the Neverseen if it's unavoidable, but /no/ unnecessary risks like this.” “Now, Sandor, might we hear what they have to say first?” Sophie had never been so glad to see Mr. Forkle, walking from behind Sandor. They might want to be done with Peírama, but not now. Not when they were so close, and they were still out there. After a reluctant snort from Sandor, the elves, demigods, and one irritated goblin formed a tense circle in the living room. Sophie fought a smile as she recalled Edaline and Grady’s faces when they walked in. “So,” Edaline started, breaking the stifling silence, “Is anyone hungry? I have mallowmelt” “Yes, please!” said Dex, as the rest of the elves joined in. Sophie noticed Percy glancing around, confused, before saying, “I feel like I should know what that is.” “Only the greatest elf creation of all time,” said Dex. “It’s basically a marshmallow pastry,” Fitz said, sounding irritated. “What’s wrong, Fitzy?” asked Keefe. “Is the big, serious Vacker too good for sweets?” “This Vacker isn’t!” Bianca declared before grabbing one of the pastries Edaline had brought back on a tray, sighing before taking a large bite. “I just think we should be focusing. Peírama is about to end the world, and we're talking about mallowmelt.” Fitz snapped. “You would be surprised how much food helps with saving the world,” Percy said, speaking up. Everyone looked at him, but he continued undeterred. “What? Me personally, I found blue pancakes boost morale.” “Hold up,” interrupted Marella. “Since when do you know how to save the world?” “Since we prevented World War Three when we were twelve,” Annabeth shot back. Marella narrowed her eyes. “I highly doubt that. Did you almost get blown up by an illegal pyrokinesis organization? Because we did.” Annabeth opened her mouth to respond, but Keefe cut in. “Alright, you guys, we get it. You both can put ‘Saving the Universe’ on your resumes; but right now the only thing we need to save is this plate of mallowmelt, because Dex is about to inhale the whole thing.” Sophie lets her thoughts wander as the room was quiet for a moment. She knew the place they had just been was a trap. She knew Peírama had a connection to both elves and the gods. She knew Peírama would want their base in a spot where these worlds connected. She knew there had to be a place like that somewhere. But why didn’t she know where it was? “Peírama would put their base in a spot the elves had a connection to, probably built…” Sophie started slowly, hoping the thought would complete itself as she spoke. “Hold up. What kind of stuff do elves build?” asked Annabeth. “Monuments. Cities. Temples. You name it, elves built it,” said Marella with a smug look on her face. “So... like the Eiffel Tower?” “Probably. Why?” said Dex, intrigued as to where Annabeth's thoughts were headed. “Do you guys know how Western civilization moves?” The elves stared blankly at her, but Sophie thought back to her human school, in the Forbidden Cities. “It was colonizers… they traveled through the world, right? Discovering new places?” Annabeth beamed, pleased that someone understood where she was going. “So, the power of the gods shifts with the focus of Western Civilization. Meaning they moved to most major countries: Greece, Rome, /Paris/, England, and eventually America. Meaning…” “They were in Paris, most likely when the Eiffel Tower was built,” Sophie realized. (GUYS I THOUGHT OF THIS ANSWER ALL BY MYSELF ARE YOU PROUD OF ME??) “Not most likely, definitely. It was built in 1889, the peak of Western Civilization in France. And approximately when an elf like Peírama was created.” Everyone was silent as that sank in. Suddenly, Keefe cleared his throat. “So. A giant metal tower in a human city? Honestly, it’s like these villains aren’t even /trying/ to be subtle anymore. I hope everyone else is as ready for a trip to Paris as I am!”
