.prologue. The gray kit sniffed. Her paws felt soft ground as her nose sniffed a lemon scent. Amàs. She was furious. Her arched back let out a hiss. “Amas. Don’t you DARE to invade my group AGAIN.” A brown tom-kit slinked out behind the trees. “Amàs?” He questioned. “In our territory? I thought we banished him, Riffa.” The gray she-kit stared at him. She sighed. “We DID, Thrush.” Thrush looked at her, and slowly pawed a rock. “Gee, look.” The tiny tom sighed. “Riffa…I—“ He didn’t have time to finish. A cherry-colored tom-kit struck behind the trees, leaving a cut in Thrush’s forehead, reeking of fresh bl00d. Riffa stared. ‘But… Amàs is Thrush’s…’ She thought. ‘Brother.’ Amàs reeked of lemon, being replaced by a scent of bl00d. His sharp, small fangs bared. “Amàs…” Riffa hissed, slight disappointment in her tone. Thrush lay cold as stone in the den of Mist, the group’s medic. His whiskers touched the soft moss beneath his paws. Mist pawed at the herbs that were scattered on the floor. Thrush blinked at the alarming sight. “What happened…” He mewed. Mist sighed. “Amàs attacked.” .chapter one. Winston stretched his paws, awakening to a bright sunrise flashing outside. His pink bed lay on the floor, and he padded over to the kitchen for a nice, warming meal. CRRNCH. The sound of Kittime Kittyfood echoed across to the ears of his housefolk. He walked away, and one of his housefolk kits opened the door. Winston’s mind raced. He lay in a dark corner of the forest, and he had no internal map. His collar was slightly scratched, lying on the dirt floor of the forest. It read: WINSTON —————— 228-6547 Winston sighed. ‘I’m no wildcat.’ A scent of lavender and raspberries lingered on the air. Winston’s colorpointed paws stepped on fresh, green grass. pff. pft. Tiny pawsteps echoed across the forest. The trees swayed. The wind rapidly shook Winston’s ears. Even the grass rose and fell with Winston’s chest. He felt comforted with his own blueberry scent as the pawsteps grew as near as the grass beneath his paws. “What do we have here…?” A solid, light gray she-kit with a scar on her cheek emerged from the shadows and safety of the trees. Winston arched his back, ready to run. “Oh, no need to be scared.” The cat gave a gentle grin. “I’m Riffa, leader of the Leaf Group.” Winston was confuzzled. “The WHAT?” He mewed. Riffa blinked. “The Leaf Group, of course.” Winston sighed. “And what is that?” He mewed. Riffa shook her head, unamused. “A group of kits.” Winston thought about that for a moment. Kits? Living with … Kits? “I…” Winston began. “I’m… I’m lost…” Riffa smiled, saying a gentle offer. “Would you…” She mewed, and put her head away for a moment, then back to Winston’s gaze. “…like to join?” Winston brightened up. “Y-yes!” Riffa chuckled. “Well we can’t keep ‘em waiting!” They bounded away to camp. .chapter two. Winston took a step. Another. “Hiiiiiiiiiiii!” A gray, white, and light orange young she-kit bounded up and tackled Winston until she pinned him, and stared at him, and smiled. “Who are YOU?!” Winston got out of the kit’s way and sighed. He arched his back, but didn’t spike his fur. “Winston.” The she-kit wiggled, ready to pounce. “What’re you -“ The she-kit pounced, and while she did, said “I’m Patch!” Winston stared at the clouds. They were darkening. The Thunder crackled like a stone statue falling. He heard the booming of an old, tall tree falling hard on fresh grass. A yelp of doe deer sounded into the camp, echoing through the ears of the cats. Winston’s ears flattened. The sound of rushing water chilled him. It was just the waterfall, rushing into a pool in the camp. The pool was surrounded by stones, there to keep the water from flooding. The RipplePool. The medic’s den lay next to it, with the smell of fresh Mint, Chamomile, and Juniper. The apprentices’ den was on its right, opposite of the pool. They were the six moon old kits. When a cat became older than twelve moons, they either left and found a family or became the group’s elder. An elder guides the little ones in hard times. In the middle of camp lay a pile of mice, voles, squirrels, and tiny birds. Thunder crackled. It struck the RipplePool which a ginger she-it was swimming. “Jasa!” Riffa scruffed the shocked kit, who was barely alive. The pool began to overflow as Riffa licked Jasa’s fur. Winston tensed. The Group began to flee, except Riffa and Jasa. Stream, the group’s medic apprentice, shouted “Riffa!” The water overflow more, Stream’s blue and brown fur flashed across the clearing. Winston tensed more. Stream pushed Riffa and Jasa aside and barely escaped the water’s wrath. “Move! Move!” Cats were being pushed by the rapid wind as the storm grew. Lightning struck trees, and boulders. “Asim! No!” A cat (Asim) stood beneath a falling tree, his face terrorized. A calico she-kit pushed Winston aside. Asim stood stood, frozen in shock. He looked at her. “Cassi? What - No-!” Cassi pushed him aside, leaving her back legs
crushed. Patch scruffed Cassi and the cats fled as the storm grew into a hurricane. NAMES AND HOW TO PRONOUNCE THEM Amàs- Ah-mos Riffa- Rih-fuh Jasa- Jo-suh Stream- Streem Mist- Mih-st Thrush- Thruh-sh Asim- Ah-Sihm Cassi- Cass-ee
