Basil knew Kel didn’t actually want to play I Spy, they were practically adults now, after all. He just knew Basil might need a distraction. From Sunny. Or where he wasn’t. For if it wasn’t for that day, he would be meeting Sunny at his destination. The city. He’d be right there on the platform, to greet him. And if it wasn’t for all the doctors, the police, Sunny’s mom, their friends, crowded around when Sunny was found to be dead, Basil would be with Sunny right now. He couldn’t, though. He’d worry everyone who loved him. Loved him? Overstatement. That day broke him a second time over. As soon as he thought that the wounds were bandaging themselves up. He didn’t see it happening, he was in his hospital bed. Visiting time. Everyone stood around, concerned if he stood up and walked out of the room. His stupid fault he didn’t see it happening. His stupid fault he couldn’t save Sunny. But this was meant to be him moving on. Finally. After two more years stuck in his house, terrified to face the world. Two years on the brink of death. “I spy with my little eye… something beginning with… H.” Basil tries his best to force out a tiny giggle. Like he finds it funny that his old friend is trying to play I Spy with him. Sometimes, the safest option is just to play along. This was his future, after all.
