Non-Theistic (Atheistic) Satanism Non-theistic branches do not believe in or worship a literal devil or supernatural entity. Instead, they use Satan as a literary and cultural symbol for rebellion, individualism, and inquiry. • LaVeyan Satanism: Founded by Anton LaVey in 1966 with the publication of The Satanic Bible, this branch centers on rational egoism, self-indulgence, and carnal desires. It treats Satan as a metaphor for human nature. • The Satanic Temple (TST): Founded by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jarry, this secular organization focuses on social justice, political activism, and the separation of church and state. They use Satan as a symbol of rational resistance against tyranny. Theistic Satanism Theistic branches believe in literal spiritual or supernatural beings, viewing Satan, Lucifer, or equivalent ancient deities as real entities worthy of veneration or respect. • Traditional Theistic Satanism: Followers believe in a literal Satan and engage in prayer, worship, or invocations, often mixing traditional adversarial concepts with western esotericism. • Temple of Set: Founded by Michael Aquino after a schism from the Church of Satan in 1975, members focus on the conscious self-development of the individual through the ancient Egyptian god Set, whom they view as the true historical origin of the Satan archetype. • Luciferianism: This current focuses on Lucifer as a symbol or being of intellectual light, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment rather than a figure of evil or destruction. Minor and Alternative Sects • Demonolatry: Involves the respectful invocation or working with specific demons for practical guidance or personal growth. • Anti-Cosmic Satanism: Focuses on chaos-glorifying currents that seek to overturn the established spiritual order of the universe.
