The Mist The difference between Olivias past and present could be described as day and night. To understand what happened, to understand where everything went wrong, we have to go back three years ago. To the war. THREE YEARS AGO Olivia idly picked at the dirt on the windowsill as she gazed outside, her head resting on her palm. The stone street outside was cracked from over-use and the constant shaking from bombs, and in the distance, she could see smoke and hear sirens from recently attacked houses. Olivia sighed and turned around in her chair to look back in her room. Her walls were a light purple, the walls covered with posters and drawings. Her floor stand mirror gazed right back at her as she looked at herself. She was in a basic black shortsleeve, black pants, and the multi-colored bracelets on her arm jangled against each other as she brushed her black, curly hair out of her face, the dark hair a starking contrast against her pale skin and mascara. She stopped gazing at herself once she heard a knock at her door, followed by the soft voice of her mom calling for her to go to the kitchen for a ‘suprise’. Olivia already knew what the ‘suprise’ was. It was her birthday, after all. Olivia got up from her chair by the window and opened her door, before walking down the hall into the kitchen. She plastered on a smile upon seeing her mom and dad sitting, a large cake on the table between them, a stack of wrapped presents sitting neatly on the floor. “Thank you guys!” She said as she sat in front of them, the cake in front of her, fourteen candles gleeming on top. “Go ahead, make a wish!” Her mom said, pulling out her phone to record. Olivia took a deep breath and closed her eyes as she thought of what to wish for. I wish this war would end, she thought, before blowing out the candles. As she opened her eyes, she saw something out of the window, not too far in the distance. It hurtled down, fast, and when if hit the ground, the world exploded into white light as the windows shattered, spraying glass into the room, intense heat rushing in moments after, the shockwave strong enough to knock everyone onto the floor as the building swayed ouminsly, before creaking loudly as the whole building fell on top of them.
