Carter's P.O.V The thing about pranking Sadie Kane is that you aren’t just playing a joke on a regular fourteen-year-old girl. You’re playing a joke on a powerful magician who is hosting the goddess of destruction, has a direct line to the Egyptian underworld, and possesses zero sense of humor when it comes to me. But it was April Fools' Day. And according to Brooklyn House rules—which I technically write down, so I should know—I was legally obligated to try. Well... that's what I'm telling everyone, anyway. Cos I still haven't forgotten about Sadie's DEFINITELY HILARIOUS prank on me! I was humiliated infront of everyone!! My plan was simple, foolproof, and entirely non-magical. I had spent three hours the night before carefully unscrewing the showerhead in her bathroom, filling it with blue gel food coloring, and twisting it back into place. When she turned on the water for her morning shower, she would get blasted with bright blue dye. She’d look like a Smurf for a week. It was classic. It was safe. What I failed to account for was the fact that I am me. At 7:00 AM, I stood outside her bedroom door, pretending to read a historical manual on Middle Kingdom battle tactics while actually waiting for the scream. I heard the bathroom door click open. I heard the rustle of her standard-issue combat boots. Then, I heard the shower turn on. I grinned, checking my watch. Three... two... one... "CARTER!" It wasn't a scream of annoyance. It was an explosion of pure, unfiltered magical feedback. Suddenly, the bathroom door flew off its hinges, blasting past my head and embedding itself directly into the hallway wall. A massive, roaring wave of bright blue water surged out of the bathroom like a tidal wave. Before I could even drop my book, the blue torrent hit me square in the chest. But it wasn't just water. Because Sadie’s subconscious magic is hardwired to react violently to anything she deems an attack, her protective wards had instantly triggered. The water hadn't just been dyed blue; it had been transfigured into a literal, living, localized hurricane of blue jelly. I was thrown backward down the corridor, tumbling head over heels in a sticky, viscous, neon-blue slip-and-slide. I crashed into a suits of ancient Egyptian armor, sending bronze khopashes and shields clattering everywhere, before finally coming to a halt at the top of the grand staircase. I blinked, coughing up a mouthful of what tasted suspiciously like blue-raspberry Jell-O. "What in the name of Ra..." I groaned, trying to push myself up. My hand slipped. I was completely coated in thick, gelatinous blue goo from head to toe. It was in my hair. It was inside my shoes. My favorite button-down shirt was ruined, stained a color that didn't exist in nature. Footsteps padded down the hallway. I looked up, wiping a glob of blue jelly away from my eyes. Sadie was standing there. She was completely dry. She was wearing her oversized pajamas, her combat boots, and a look of absolute, utter bewilderment that lasted for about two seconds before she realized what had happened. She looked at the destroyed doorway, looked at the trail of blue slime, and then looked at me, pinned under a piece of Pharaoh's armor like a crushed Smurf. Her eyes went wide. She clapped a hand over her mouth. "Did you..." She choked out, her shoulders shaking. "Carter, did you try to dye my shower?" "It was a joke," I muttered, my voice squeaking slightly. "April Fools." Sadie let out a sound that was half-snort, half-shriek, and then she completely lost it. She fell against the wall, laughing so hard she practically slid to the floor. She pointed a finger at me, tears streaming down her face. "You—you absolute muppet!" she howled. "You tried to prank ME? Isis thought we were under a hostile siege by a water demon! She threw up a deflection hex!" "I noticed," I said grimly, trying to untangle my leg from a bronze shield. The jelly made a loud, wet squelch sound, which only made Sadie laugh harder. "Look at you!" she gasped, clutching her stomach. "You look like you've been eaten and regurgitated by a baboon! Oh, this is the best day of my life. I’m calling Walt. I’m calling Zia. I need a camera." "Sadie, don't you dare—" She yelled down the hall, and our magic-built baboon, Khufu, came trotting around the corner. He took one look at me, shrieked with delight, and immediately began scooping blue jelly off my shoulder and stuffing it into his mouth. I sighed, letting my head fall back against the floor. "Happy April Fools' Day, Sadie." "Oh, it is, Carter," she wiped a tear from her eye, still giggling uncontrollably as she whipped out her phone. "It really, really is." And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how my attempt of a prank just made me much, much more embarrassed.
