She was puzzled and confused as to why I ran away and hid in a box to get away from my troubles, so she asked, “Why are you hiding from your family?” I tried to keep my composure in front of this girl and calmly responded, “Ben.” I think she immediately began to pick up on what I was saying, but she needed more information, so she asked, “What’s up with Ben?” I responded, “Ben talked to me after school, and demanded that I pledge that we’re just friends. Also, if he hasn’t made it clear yet, he still wants to date you.” Kate immediately began to show an expression of worry. She said, “I didn’t know we were ‘dating.’” “That’s what he thinks,” I said as Kate continued to worry, “but not what I think. Sure, we’re just friends, but did you want to date me?” She didn’t give an immediate response, but what happened next said it all. We stood up from sitting on the floor, and then she hugged me. Her feelings became loud and clear; she would choose me over Ben any day. However, she did ask, “Can you please leave this little incident a secret? I don’t want Ben to think we’re dating, because he’ll k--- you and kiss me.” “This never happened,” I replied. She didn’t know it, but I was hell-bent on keeping our encounter a secret, but before I left, she said, “Hey, can you keep this a secret too?” “Keep what a secret?” I responded. She walked over to me and kissed me on the cheek, then I said, “Oh, got it.” She hugged me one last time before I left, but now I had to deal with my parents who I thought would probably chew me out for running to Kate’s house. However, I hadn’t looked at a mirror, so when I got inside the house, my parents were wondering why I looked redder than a strawberry. I also hadn’t been able to speak because I figured I would sound all squeaky and high-pitched. “Why do you look so red, son?” my mom asked.
