Joey started out as an independent, adventurous outdoor cat, but over time, he made a conscious choice to trade the big outside world for a life spent entirely by my side. For seven beautiful years, he was my absolute fur baby, filling our home with his distinct, vibrant personality and a heart that was open to absolutely everyone. Joey loved every single person he met, greeting the world with an open warmth that was impossible to ignore, and he shared a special bond with his brother, Boxel. He had his hilarious, mischievous quirks too—especially his absolute obsession with Mexican food, where he would constantly try to sneak a sneaky bite right off the plate whenever you weren't looking. I will always miss that loud, slightly raspy purr that let me know exactly how content he was. When he was truly at his happiest, he would drool—a tiny, messy sign of pure comfort and love that always made me smile. He was my ultimate companion and a true shoulder cat, always wanting to be as close to me as possible. Feeling his weight on my shoulder and listening to that raspy engine of a purr right next to my ear was the best feeling in the world. Joey was also an incredible fighter. Dealing with a hidden heart condition and severe asthma wasn't easy for him, but his resilience was nothing short of miraculous. He fought his way back from three different life-threatening asthma incidents, proving time and again how fiercely he wanted to stay here with us. Even when breathing was a struggle, his purr never stopped. When the fourth attack came and his tired body finally couldn't fight it off, it broke my heart, but it also made me realize just how hard he had fought for us all along. Every extra moment we got to share over those seven years was a hard-won gift. The house feels far too quiet now, and the spaces where he used to sit hurt to look at. Joey now rests peacefully under a bird of paradise plant next to the garden, a beautiful, vibrant spot that matches the bright spirit he brought into our lives. Love doesn't vanish just because a life ends, and he is finally free from the struggle, breathing completely easy in the quiet of the garden. Joey taught me so much about trust, loyalty, bravery, and the profound beauty of a generous spirit. I am endlessly grateful that he chose to come inside, that he fought so fiercely to stay by my side, and for every single shoulder ride we shared. He brought more joy to my life, to Boxel, and to everyone around him than he could ever know, and he will always hold a piece of my heart. Rest easy, my beautiful boy.
Breath easy now, my fur baby
