Every time someone narrowly escapes death, a tiny fragment of an alternate life breaks away from reality. Most of those fragments dissolve. Same thing with big decisions. When someone has to make a big life-altering decision, the pieces of the alternative could-have-been realities are often left behind. They are sent to go find them. It’s like someone collecting the extra little pieces of string from a finished weaving so they can turn it back into a piece of thread. These threads? Fragment collects them. They carry thousands of unrealized futures inside their fluffy body: the soldier who became a baker, the queen who abandoned her throne, the child who grew up to explore the stars. Their blue fur resembles the sky because every fragment creates its own little atmosphere inside them. The red markings? Those belong to the futures that were stolen rather than freely lost. >:3 They can show someone the life they might have lived. They cannot change the past or predict the future. They sometimes accidentally speak in the voices of people who never existed. They have an entire personality made from the memories of someone who was never born. SO The tragedy: They are slowly forgetting which thoughts belong to them and which belong to their collection. The creepy part: Sometimes they dream about a life that nobody narrowly escaped.
