Tonight was cold. Well every day in the Two-Leg city was cold but tonight was strange, tonight white stars (which his mother had called "snow") fell from the sky and made piles on the sidewalks. "Mommy, it's too cold!" wailed his sister Teeny. Robin and Ash, his other sisters, huddled into their mom's side. Sandy turned away from them, not interested in his sisters complaints. He was stronger than them from birth, all of them. His only brother was stillborn and the others were weak, Teeny was blind and Robin could barely move and Ash was such a wailer at night no one could ever get any sleep! "Spoiled kittens." he grumbled and wandered farther away from from his wailing sisters. He sniffed at one of the pieces of snow as it drifted down. He recoiled in surprise as it touched his nose and melted so quickly. It was freezing! "Sandy, you should not wander so far off from Rosy!" snapped his father. He grabbed Sandy by the scruff and carried him back towards his mother, ignoring his son as he squirmed in his grasp trying to be freed. "Ice, thank goodness! Did you find anything? Any trash?" wheezed his mother. Even a blind and deaf mouse could see how sick she has. She was not able to stand so she had made a nest under a dumpster while his father, Ice, collected whatever "food" (banana peels and rats that died of sickness or starvation) he could find and bring it to them. "Im sorry. You will have to split these chicken bones." sighed his father, shoving the old bones toward them with a mud stained paw. Hungrily he and his sisters dived for the food, but being the strongest sibling he pushed them back and got the first bites of the food. Immediately he spit out the dry, hard, crunchy white stuff. "Eww! This isn't food! Im not eating this!" wailed Sandy, pushing the stuff away. It was horrid from the texture to the flavor! "Eat it or starve! A wild cat is not picky! If you want real prey just go to the forest and get eaten alive by those "clan" cats!" snarled his mother without a hint of pity. She turned away from her son and started to lick Teeny who was starting wail. "Fine then!" he muttered under his breath and started to turn away when he heard a bloodcurdling scream from his mother. "TEENY! She's dead! She's dead!" screamed his mother. He watched her shake his sisters still body. Serves her right! he thought and turned away. Why should he care? What did his sister ever do for him? It was about two days later when he woke up to a horrid stench. This stench was different then the dumpster. Quietly he got up and noticed something. Robin was missing! Her scent led from under the dumpster yet his father, mother and sister Ash were still there. Robin couldn't move on her own...! Sandy followed his sisters scent trail and froze at the sight. There was a huge brown dog crouched over a small ginger and black body. Blood surrounded his sister as the dog dug in for a meal. She was dead, no doubt about it. Her mouth was open in a silent scream. She must have been trying to walk again! "Sandy!" he heard a gasp as a paw snatched him and pulled him back into the small shelter under the dumpster. "Don't move or go out there till the dog is gone!" "You mean you knew? That she is dead? Does mommy know?" exclaimed Sandy in surprise. "Shh! She will soon." whispered his dad. But when Rosy woke up she did not react as well as Ice. "No! My precious kit!" she wailed and ran straight at the dog, despite her weakness. "No! Rosy your not strong enough!" cried his father, but it was too late. As soon as the dog saw her coming it lounged and Sandy looked away just in time. There was a large snap that sounded like a bone being smashed and then a thump. She was dead. "Mom!" her heard a wail and a flash of gray as his sister, Ash, rushed to the crumpled body as soon as the dog had left. Cautiously his dad scented the air and followed. "Ash get back here this is dangerous!" snapped his father as he ran to Rosy's dead body. He sniffed it and recoiled. "We have to move, the scent of a dead animal will attract predators." "You don't even seem upset!" screeched Ash at her father. She let out a wail and fall onto her mothers body letting out loud sobs. "Why should we be? She never did anything accept lay there!" snarled Sandy. He ignored the small pang of grief that pierced his heart and turned away. "They both deserved to die." he said to his sister. Ash gaped at him in horror. Ice glanced at his son. "We need to keep moving. I will carry you Ash, Sandy you can walk on paw." said his father. He scooped Ash up in his mouth and started to carry her away. Sandy rushed after his father, three of his strides for each of his dads. "Of course I have to walk. Of course Ash is the one being carried. I know you hate me. I know everyone hates me! No one will ever love me!" he screamed to the stars silently, and followed his dad.
