PROLOGE The scent of fox filled the air. The lethal shape of a cat moved through the bushes slowly, then sprang at the fox with a growl of anger. It yelped with surprise, then turned left then right, jumping frantically trying to get the cat off. “Leave now or I’ll rip your fur off, you fox-heart!” the cat hissed under her breath. But the fox turned and snapped at the cat with its teeth. The cat jumped off with surprise.The fox shook himself and started to walk, growling to the cat who, still shocked, watched as the fox drew closer. Then the cat shook its pelt and backed away from the fox. But not fast enough, the fox leapt at the cat and clawed at its eyes, the she-cat yelped with pain, its eye and nose bleeding badly. Then an angry yowl came from a bush, and a group of cats jumped out at the fox. The fox too slowly saw that it was outnumbered and tried to run away when the cats leapt as one at the fox. “That will teach you to mess with warriors!” 1 2 A dark gray tom yowled at the fox as it ran away. “Smokefur, fetch Fallberry, Flowerheart is hurt!” A cream she-cat called urgently to the dark gray tom. He nodded and raced away. In a stone hollow lay the injured she-cat. A gray she-cat sat beside her. “How do you feel Flowerheart?” The gray she-cat asked her. “I feel like I’ll never see out of this eye again. I won't, will I Fallberry?” Ask the white she-cat. “No Flowerheart, the wound in your eye isn’t too deep but it can get infected, and if I try to get the dirt out with my claws it will only make it worse. You won’t be able to see out of that eye, but I can make it look like you can. You might not be able to be a warrior, but I could use an apprentice, if…if you want?” Fallberry meowed quietly. “I guess that’s okay,if that is how I can help my Clanmates.” She meowed back. Later a tan tom came to visit her. “Oh Flowerheart you can’t be a medicine cat. We…we’re mates now, right? And…but medicine cats can’t have mates,what will I do?” he meowed sadly. “Oh Owlface I don’t know,but I still love you and I’ll never stop.” She meowed sadly with a sigh.
