Sandy did not know how long they had been walking. The days and nights blurred bye as they only stopped for quick rests and to dig through the trash every once and a while. He had never been this tired. He left a trail of blood everywhere he walked from his sore, cracked paws. Every once and a while the small family would have to run for their lives if a two-leg came after them. "I hate this." he would complain to his dad every day. "I know." his dad would respond without a hint of emotion. But when he and Ash asked where they were going, his father wouldn't answer. Sandy expected he didn't know either. This continued until one day they heard footsteps, running. Screams echoed and sirens wailed far off in the distance, slowly getting closer. "Whats going on?" shrieked Ash in horror, fluffing up her speckled gray pelt. "Daddy i'm scared!" Ice sniffed the air and looked at his kits. "It is a Two-Leg fire!" he gasped and looked off into the distance, where orange flames licked at the sky and burst out of a building. Sandy could feel the heat from here! Off in the distance he saw a cluster of Two-Legs. One was a adult female, weeping and trying to run back into the home that was currently flaming and quickly falling down. An adult male was shouting to the house tears rolling down his face. Suddenly a high pitched wail of both a cat and a human echoed from the burning house. "A Two-Leg kit! And a cat!" gasped Ice. Suddenly his father turned from them and rushed towards the building. "I know this cat! Woody! Woody!" he started to howl. Horror flared in his eyes and without hesitation he leaped into the burning building. "No!" screamed Sandy. Next to him Ash collapsed with a wail. Now all they could do was wait as the flames shot out of the building and licked hungrily at the sky. Then their was a shape, silhouette against the red and orange. The figure held another in his mouth, a cat younger than their father yet older than he and his sister. At that moment the building exploded with flames and the windowsill they were on fell. Two wails erupted from the windowsill and Sandy watched his father fall, down, down... down until there was a thump. Sandy froze in place. His legs turned to jelly and his vision blurred. "No.." he choked out and fell down the world spinning around him. "No!" screamed Ash and ran towards Ice's limp body. Sandy followed numbly, his mind fogged except for three words. He is dead. He is dead. And than there was movement in the heap of fur. "Father? Father!" shrieked Ash in relief. But a brown tabby head rose up, a confused and horrified expression on his face. "I... I am Woody." He stammered. He looked down at the bleeding body of Ice. A piece of wire had cut a huge gash into his neck. "I... Ice? Ice! Oh no... oh no..." whimpered the cat called Woody. "You killed him! You killed him!" shrieked Sandy in pain, launching himself at the small cat. Woody attempted to curl up in a ball, too weak to stand up or fight back. "No Sandy stop, its not Woody's fault!" sobbed Ash, pulling Sandy off the cat. Woody sent her a grateful look, and than there were shouts from the TwoLegs as they raced over. As the TwoLegs neared Woody looked at them. "Where is your mom?" he croaked hoarsely. "Dead." muttered Sandy, shuffling his paws. Ash let out another low sob. Woody's eyes widened, and than squeezed shut. "Head to the forest, where the wild cats live. Quickly! There you will find help!" he growled urgently "But... the wild cats are evil... won't they eat us?" Whimpered Ash. For a second Woody looked amuse, than shook his head. "Tell them you have met Woody and Ice. Tell them Ice is your father. What you must do is go to the great twisted tree in the middle of there territory, but only go on night of no moon. Now go, now!" Shrieked Woody limping back to his owners as they started to notice the two new kittens, and the dead body of Ice. Before Sandy could complain, Ash turned and shot towards the trees. He looked after her in shock and horror, before following behind. What were they doing?
