Click flag ;) TW: contains mentions of a guillotine and beheading, not violent but just so you know :D Katara trudged towards the detention room for another lunch period in actual torture. A few seconds later, she heard footsteps, and she stopped walking. She turned around, expecting Hibiscus to be following her to rub in the fact that she had gotten detention for the fifteenth time in a row—but the person wasn’t Hibiscus. In fact, Katara didn’t think she’d ever seen him before. “Are you following me?” Katara asked him. “Uh, no. I was actually gonna ask you the same thing, but…” he shrugged, like that finished his sentence. “So you have detention, too?” Katara shoved her hands in her pockets. “More like Horror Story In Real Life,” he grumbled. “Right?” Katara said, suddenly feeling much more comfortable talking to him than before. “Next thing you know, they’ll be installing a guillotine.” Katara realized a moment too late that that was a human thing. “What’s a guillotine?” the boy asked. He sounded like someone who didn’t speak English and thought that being “beheaded” was a good thing. Katara cringed. “Trust me, you don’t want to know.” The boy shrugged. “OK, then. So what’re you in for?” “Ugh. That question,” Katara groaned. “Do full fairies always-” She cut herself off when she realized that the boy didn’t know she was half-fairy. “Wait—you’re the Human Girl?” His grin was unmistakable. “You don’t think I’m a creepy monster or something?” Katara asked. He laughed. “Nope! I’m also pretty much a creep to everyone else. Comes in handy when nobody’s there to tip the teachers off about my evil plans.” He winked. “You have evil plans?” “Yep! How about you? You seem like you’ve made fun of someone’s name before.” At Katara’s jaw drop, he added, “I can also read minds. Surprise, surprise, am I right?” Katara rolled her eyes a little and said, “Actually, yeah. My old principal’s name was the name of a human country. And there was another country that sounded just like it. And I got into a contest to see who could pick on Mr. Uruguay the most.” She grinned. “Next thing you know, it’s just before lunch, and I walk up to him, and say, ‘Hey, Mr. Paraguay-’” She smothered a giggle. “And he turns around, red faced, and-” “And he screams, ‘DETENTION!!!’ loud enough for the whole school to hear!” The boy’s face looked like it was actually a piece of the sun when Katara doubled over laughing. Katara’s insides actually hurt from laughing when a teacher passed by them and said, “You two better get where you were going.” The boy waited until he’d gotten out of earshot to stage-whisper, “Oh, he is gonna PAY.” Katara laughed again. “We should actually go, though. We’ll get detention again if-” “Ugh, don’t remind me!” The boy glared at the ceiling. “Take my brain, please. So I don’t have to think about the actual ‘consequences of my actions.’” “Hey, I don’t think I caught your name,” Katara said, suddenly realizing that she’d been referring to him as “the boy” in her head. He cracked a small smile and said, “Alant.” “Katara—but I’m sure you already know that.”
