Twelve year old Reno Latland was bored. Very bored. So bored in fact, that he could not think of one thing to do by himself or with his five year old sister, Sarse Latland. When one is bored one tends to do dangerous things so Reno opened his second story window and courageously backflipped onto the roof. Reno landed on the roof of his house and, complementing his backflip, admired the village of Etsat, his village. He saw the Snapdragon inn, Dusty Letters, the town book store, the library, the jail (the thought of which made him quiver), the market, the Aloc River, and the path to Snapdragon Forest. Even upon seeing all these wondrous things Reno was still bored. While sitting on the roof Reno heard his sister, Sarse yelling “Weeno! Weeno! Da morchent is here!” Reno was always excited when the merchant came and today was no exception. He swung through the window, snatched his money-bag, and flew down the stairs. Reno’s mother, Taa’l was cooking dinner and Reno’s father, Hoor was tending to the bloats. “Weeno!” His sister said, “dis morchent is speshel!” This made Reno run even faster. Soon, he saw the merchant, he was dressed in a fur coat and had a colossal backpack “Weeno,” said his sister, “wook at dat packpack.” Reno and Sarse ran as fast as they could to see this merchant’s wares. “What do you have in stock?” asked Reno “Ah,” said the strange merchant, who had a gravelly voice with a strange accent, “I have daggers, swords, knives, insects of all kinds, tales of a strange animal called a squirrel, dried Nib’ler, and many, many, MANY more.” “Do … do you have books?” “Ah,” said the strange merchant, “I have a few, the people in Rab Harbor are desperate for books but yes, I have a few.” “How much are they?” Inquired Reno “Ah,”said the merchant, “ten bits.” “TEN BITS!” shouted Reno, surprised “Ah,” said the merchant, “but maps are five.” “W-where d-do y-ou c-c-come from?” asked Reno, still struck by the price of the books “Ah,” said the merchant, “I come from a place called America." “What forbidden realm is that?” inquired Reno “No,” said the merchant, “It is very far away” “May I buy a map of it?” asked Reno, handing over one-fourth of his bits “Here you go.” said the merchant giving Reno his map. He walked home because he was still out of breath from running to buy from the strange merchant . When he got home Reno hung his map on the wall. It was written in a strange language, which Reno did not understand. There were words like Ohio or Rhode Island and up north there was a large landmass labeled Canada Never had Reno seen such a strange language such as this. The next day Reno was woken up by Taa’l, who said, “Reno! It’s time to get up!” Reno groaned and slid out of bed “Time for breakfast.” his mother said as Reno climbed down the ladder, which led downstairs. After a breakfast of reici flatbread and bloat strips Reno got dressed then, he went outside to feed the bloats. “Sorry,” he said to the bloats “But we had you for breakfast!” The bloats did not seem to care Reno had just eaten one of their kin. Just when he was done feeding the bloats Reno heard shouting. Usually when there is frantic yelling in Etsat Village there is big news so naturally, Reno ran into town to hear what the commotion was about, “They’re coming!” one man yelled, “The Roklans are attacking! Send help!” The weary man collapsed to the ground as he said, “Yitwrm Fort…Send…Help.” Villagers began picking up weapons and dashing down the road. Reno suspected that if the Roklans had attacked Fort Yitwrm then Rab Harbor would be next then Etsat. He ran home. As soon as he got home Reno began his bag. He put in a dagger, a shield, a map of Diiimb, a survival guide, a sleeping bag, some interesting rocks, a flint and steel, dried bloat, water, a bow, and some arrows. Reno was ready to run. “When the Roklans come,” he thought, “I’ll just run! No being killed for me!” “Reno!” Hoor shouted, “Get in the tub!” Reno bathed, brushed his teeth with a Dosye root, and went to bed.
Reno was awoken by a heavy knocking on the door. He went to open it. A man in armor was standing at the door “You and your father have been drafted to fight for King Dultham Kaz the XXII.” the man said. Reno’s jaw dropped “Get your father.” the man harshly said. Reno dashed upstairs to wake his father, who came down fully dressed. “Reno and Hoor Latland, you have been drafted to fight for King Dultham Kaz XXII. You will take up arms and walk to the jail to be enlisted.” Reno ran upstairs to pack and get dressed. Hoor also ran up to his bedroom to get his sword. Reno and Hoor walked to the jail to fight for Kaz. The next morning Sarse and Taa’l found these notes: Dear Taa’l and Sarse, Reno and I have been drafted to fight for Kaz against the Tooh-Bon. I know you wonder why Reno had to go. It is because Reno has reached the minimum age to be enrolled, 12. Take care of the place, you know how to run it. With Love-hoor Dear Mom and Sarse, We have been drafted to fight for Kaz. It will be a great adventure, i heard that Fort Yitwrm is still standing and we’re going to defend it! From-Reno After reading these Taa’l and Sarse got to their chores. Meanwhile, Reno and Hoor had arrived at Rab Harbor, which was the first stop along the road. “Load up troops!” the Kazian general, Jerto Yelap proclaimed as he drew his sword from its sheath. “We're going!” Hoor whispered to Reno, who nodded and said, “Look out Tooh-bon!” END OF CHAPTER ONE That music is great right? Even better music coming next chapter. It gets way more intense. Might have a Jurassic Park referance later in the book...
