There’s people over there…” Yasushi thought. In the distance, she could see two people arguing, and they appeared to be looking for something. It was weird that they were out here in the dead of the night instead of resting for the exam the next day, but Yasushi couldn’t say much about them, as she herself was also out. Yasushi stopped sharply as she was once again reminded of what awaited her. Hope Academy was the number one magic academy on the planet, and to get in, you needed to pass three strict and difficult exams. Yasushi had already passed the first one, and she was still waiting for the results of the second, which would be announced in the morning. However, she wasn’t all that worried about it. The main target of her concern was the third exam, which would also take place in the morning. It was an exam where you had to work together with two other students in a competitive magic battle. Yasushi had already found two promising teammates beforehand, and she trusted them with all her heart. She absolutely did not want to let them down. Their names were Firekle and Arina, and they were currently sleeping in the tent the three were sharing. Hope Academy provided them with tents on the school grounds to spend the night. Yasushi was extremely worried about whether or not she could be of use to her teammates tomorrow, and it had bothered her so much that she couldn’t fall asleep, and thus she was taking a walk so late at night. Slowly and timidly, she approached the two arguing. “You must have stolen it, Shen. Where else would it be?” “Don’t always put the blame on me, Itsume. I didn’t even touch it!” In the split second that they quieted down, Yasushi took action and slightly raised her voice, “E-excuse m-me!” Due to her immense social anxiety, Yasushi could never speak properly. However, the two appeared to have heard her and turned around, a surprised expression on their faces. “...I thought we were the only ones awake by now.” Said the girl on the left. She had messy, long black hair. “U-um! I’m Natsu Yasushi! Just call me Yasushi! If you want, I can, um, help with whatever you’re, um, doing. I want to f-focus my brain on something else.” Yasushi hurriedly gave an introduction. “Really? That would be great. I’m Itsume. I…lost my can of lollipops during the day. It’s about the size of a palm…maybe a bit bigger?” The girl explained. Although her words showed gratitude, her expression was cold. Yasushi wondered if Itsume was like that to everyone she didn’t know. “I-I’ll help you find it! No p-problem!” “Ignoring me, are you?” The boy on the right cut in, glaring sharply at Itsume. He then turned to Yasushi with a much friendlier look and said, “I’m Shen.” “Shut up. No one was talking to you.” Retorted Itsume. Before Yasushi had the time to react, the two were shouting at each other again. “I-I’ll be back soooooon!” Yasushi called, though she doubted they heard her. Yasushi was confident she could find the lollipop can, because despite not having the ability to speak properly, she did have insane luck. That was the reason she had passed the first exam, which was composed of written quizzes. Yasushi had merely guessed the answers on the one subject she was bad at: foreign languages. True to Yasushi’s expectations, she soon came face to face with the can. It was tiny, and just as Itsume had said, a bit larger than the size of a palm. Inside were about five lollipops. Yasushi smiled and quickly grabbed it, then stuffed it in her pocket. She was in the forest area on the school grounds, which was pretty close to the tents where everyone was. Itsume must have dropped her can here earlier, so Shen was innocent. Delighted that she had helped out, Yasushi started to return back. However, before she could take even two steps, an insanely heavy force pinned her down. Yasushi let out a cry of confusion and shock, then turned her head. ...! Directly above her was a wolf-like beast, its body covered with magical energy. A magical beast… Fear and panic coursed through Yasushi’s veins, disenabling her ability to move. I thought I had good luck… Despair was settling in Yasushi’s mind, as no matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t move, due to both the fear and the immense weight of the beast pinning her down. At this rate, it’s going to kill me… Yasushi’s eyes suddenly widened, No. I can’t die yet. Firekle and Arina need me for the exam tomorrow. Itsume needs me to bring back her lollipop can. There are people…who are currently relying on me. So, I absolutely cannot die yet!
Yasushi stared straight at the sky and smiled, “Besides…you’ll be disappointed if I give up now, right? My best Chen.” Chen was Yasushi’s favorite fictional character, as well as her idol. Driven by all the energy and determination she had mustered, Yasushi concentrated. Half a second before the beast’s claws ripped into her head, Yasushi shot a massive blast of anemo magic, straight at the beast’s belly. The beast growled in surprise as it was rocketed upwards, straight towards the sky, before dropping down with a heavy thud and a groan (or more accurately, a growl). But it didn’t end there. Yasushi kept on firing blasts after blasts of sharp anemo blades at the beast, leaving wounds and blood all over its body. The beast didn’t even have a chance to go on the offensive, as Yasushi left no opening. Finally, the blades hit a vital spot, and the beast collapsed, all signs of life gone from its body. I-It’s over…! Yasushi let out a sign of relief and dropped to her knees, her mana drained. She reached into her pocket and got out the lollipop can. It didn’t have a single scratch on it. “Gotta get this back to Itsume…” Yasushi wasted no time getting back on her feet. If another beast attacked her right now at this state, she’d have no more leftover energy to deal with it, and would be a certain goner. So, she ran at full speed back to where she had met Itsume and Shen, even though she could barely feel her legs anymore. Itsume’s eyes practically beamed when she saw her precious lollipop can nestled in Yasushi’s arms, safe and sound. “You found it…!” She called, “Where…was it?” Yasushi pointed to the forest, “It was l-lying t-there.” Although she still stumbled over her words, Yasushi felt much more confident. The fight earlier still felt surreal. I’ll keep that a secret for now, for better or for worse. “Your luck is amazing, Yasushi. Of all the places to look…” Itsume paused, then turned her head, crossed her arms, and said, “...Thanks.” “Woah! A word of thanks from Itsume?! You’re remarkable, Yasushi.” Shen commented from beside Itsume. Itsume immediately punched him, “Do you want to go to hell?” Shen punched her back, “Do you?!” Even with the commotion in front of her, Yasushi still smiled brightly, “Ehehe!” She turned to Itsume and lightly tilted her head, then replied, “You’re welcome!” After saying farewell to the two, Yasushi returned to her tent, carefully made her way to her mattress so she wouldn’t disturb Firekle and Arina, then lied down. Exhaustion was catching up with her. Come to think of it…what was a magical beast doing in the school? Before she could ponder the question further, Yasushi drifted off to sleep. THE END
