A punch. A normal sound usually, at least to a loser like me. But this was different. The cracking sound spread across the hallway as everyone went silent. Audible panting. From none other than Kevin, captain of the football team, and school bully. His friend - Bear, i think the name was? stumbled back. "Wh-" A pause. "WHAT THE HECK MAN!?" He swung back, and Kevin hit the lockers. He didn't seem to even realize what he did, just looked around, grabbed my hand, and booked it. I opened my mouth to speak, but... "DON'T TALK YOU'LL JUST MAKE IT WORSE." I shut my mouth, and kept running with him. --------------------------------------------------------------------- I didn't even realize what I did, or where it even happened, honestly. But I DO know WHY. That kid behind me, Finley, is who i've had a crush on for the past year. And i'm TIRED of pretending I don't know them. SO, i've actually been planning something like this for a while now. But... I wasn't expecting for it to be so sudden. That's why I sweat as I practically drag the guy behind me. Finally, we come to a stop, like, 5 hallways away. "What..." "Hey ner- F-finley." Reflex. They look up at me, scared. That cut me like a knife by the way. "Sorry for... them earlier. They-" "Why did you-" Their eyes widen before relaxing after seeing my calm expression. "Why, Kevin, did you help me." "Because I..." I can't say why without confessing. But there are other reasons, so I force myself to continue. "Because I'm not on their side, Finley. I've never liked them." "B-but why!? Why me specifically!? Do you... WANT something from me!? Tell me what it is, and... I'll give it to you. I know you don't... really care all of a sudden." I have no response to that. I don't deserve their trust at all. Not really. I've been dumb, even to them. But... I have to try. If that means losing this prison I've made myself, I'll do it. Wall by wall. Bar by bar. And that starts... by giving them space. I get up and take my jacket off, wrapping it around my waist. "better..." I mutter to myself. "Look man, if you need space, I'll leave you." "Greatly appreciated. Kevin." I nod and walk away.
