Each instrument is a layer, its volume the opacity. If the lyrics are the lineart, the melody is the color. Harmonies the lighting, drums the shading, chords and pads the background. Effects and mixing the rendering, mastering the final touch-ups and textures. So, here on the left we have some lineart. On the right, a colored picture with a background, rendered and finished but not shaded/lit. This is mostly a vocal effects test.
