[ TW for caps, intense grief, mentions of death, etc. ] ────────────────────────────────── · · · · · · ────────────────────────────────── The morning was cold, but normal. Houndsun woke with a yawn, Viperfishwhisper wrapped around sun like always. Shine gently nudged their mate off, trying not to disturb his peaceful slumber just because pup wanted to hunt. ··· When sun returned to camp, a horrible feeling washed over them, the fur on the back of his neck stood on end. Whispers, murmurs. Clanmates gathered around... something. Houndsun knew what this was. He'd seen it all too often — someone was dead. The elite rushed forward to see who it was and what had happened. Was it just his eyes playing tricks on them, or were his clanmates looking at him strangely? As if they were... sorry for pup? Making his way into the crowd, Hunner finally saw the body. The demi-tom froze in his tracks, eyes wide and jaw agape as his brain tried to reason with what he was seeing. No... It couldn't be. Blue-grey fur… Spotted with brown... ··· Viperfishwhisper. All hell broke loose. The tom let out an unearthly screech as pup saw the body of his mate laying there, unmoving. Houndsun's whole world felt like it had shattered. It /had/ been. It wasn't true. Houndsun pushed the surrounding cats away, collapsing onto the ground Crawling towards Viperfishwhisper, pulling himself over him. Sobbing, tears rolling down and soaking into Viperfishwhisper's cooling fur as if Houndsun's grief and love for him could bring him back. The cats slowly dispersed, leaving the wailing cat alone, no one sure of what to do. Sobbing. Shaky, ragged breaths as sun took in the last of Viperfishwhisper's fading scent. Clutching onto his fur, his soft, silky, /cold/ fur. Nuzzling their beloved, nudging him and telling him to wake up. "This isn't funny, Vipey." A choked whisper. A heartbroken cry. "Wake up. /Please/ wake up." A desperate plea, unable to be fulfilled. Viperfishwhisper would never wake again. And so Houndsun sobbed, cried until his voice was hoarse and still sun didn't stop. Hound's cries grew softer, as he slowly cried himself to sleep, still desperately holding onto his beloved's body. Embracing Viperfishwhisper one last time.
