Joel: Great. Happy your feeling better Pearl: Aweee so sweet :) Anyways, guess who I’ve been messaging since I've been sick? Joel: Who? Pearl: You remember Mumbo? He was Grisns friend and I found his phone number! I finally got hime to agree to see us! Joel: Oh great good job. Pearl: Thank you :) were meeting him at his house tommorrow. Don't be laate! Joel: Yep. See you. --- Pear was running late. ‘Traffic was terrible’ she had texted ‘just start without me’. But Joel was not going into some random guy's house. Well.. kind of random person, he Mumbo a bit from school, he hung out with Grian a lot, but that's all Joel can remember about him. His house looked normal, one story, painted blue, grass cut, flowers in the garden beds. Pearl finally showed up, jumping out of the car and running up to him. “Joel! Sorry I'm late! Traffic was HORRIBLE” “It's fine, let's get this over with.” Joel doesn't wait for an answer knocking on the door. They wait in silence for a few moments, before footsteps can be heard, and the door opens to what is assumed to be Mumbo. The years have not been kind to him, dark circles and disheveled hair, he looks tired, maybe he just woke up, maybe he hasn't slept, he twitches. “Oh! Yo-our Pearl. And… Joel…” Pearl nods excitedly and goes to shake Mumbo's hand, the man stares at it, his pupils have shriveled into small slits, vampire. Pearl's hand falls back to her side. “Can we come in?” Joel breaks the silence, and Mumbo nods, clearly also happy to be let out of this very awkward situation. He leads us into the living room, where we sit on a well loved couch, Mumbo sitting on a worn arm chair a bit aways. Joel opens his notebook. “Would you like to start?” “Oh yea-h sure” he fiddles with his hands, his head moving to the side involuntarily.
“Pleeeeeease??!!” “No-o…!” Grian grins, “I was kidding! You don't need to go! Me and Scar will be fine!” Grian pats Mumbo on the arm, he flinches, but accepts it none the less, few people were allowed to touch Mumbo, Grian and Scar being two of them, he got used to their excessive contact, but it made him squirm occasionally. “Scar will be here soon, then we can go to the woods” Mambo nodded, the woods were nice, quiet, safe. He was excited to go, he loved to hang out with his friends, he loved his friends. Mumbo was taken out of his thoughts by a shriek, he turned to see Grian be tackled by a flash of blue and green. Grian landed on the ground with a thud, Scar on top of him, hugging him around the middle. Scar stands up, grabbing a stump for support, he walks over to Mumbo, hugging him lightly, Mambo hugged him back, a reaction programmed into him from years of being their friends. Grian starts running, Scar following behind him, Mambo hesitates for a moment before running to catch up. They spend their time climbing trees, playing in the small house that the neighborhood kids all helped each other build, Mumbo, Grian and Scar hang out in the shack the most, but some of the others played in there sometimes. On this day the shack was empty except for them, a few toys were scattered about, some plastic ponies that were clearly left behind by Bdubs, a few little wind up toys, a barbie with her hair cut off. It was a messy place, but it was theirs, and they loved it. The trio huddled together by a pile of blankets sneakily stolen from the linen closets of almost all of the children's house, Mumbo's favorite was right where he left it after bringing it from his house. They spent their day crafting an amazing plan to get to have a sleepover after Easter was over. They went over to Scars house, which had the best living room out of the three, and begged his parents over and over to let them have a sleepover. The begging seemed to work, as Scars parents smiled and patted the three boys on the head. “Of course!” they said, “we’ll go call your parents juust to make sure they would be okay with it!” They were of course okay with it, it took a lot of willpower to stop Grian and Scar when they had an idea, Mambo found the best thing to do was to just go along, and he was happy to, he loved hanging out with his friends, it made his chest warm, and that meant happy, and happy was good. The first night was amazing, they watched three movies, ate lots of candy and fell asleep at 10, squished together like sardines in a can. The next day, Scar and Grian began to get ready to go into the woods, Mambo joining to send them off. It was loud, the children were all jumping together, the three adults wraggling them like sheep dogs. When the bell rang, the children were off, Scar waved at Mumbo before racing after his friends, Grian gave a quick hug before following. And Mumbo sat down to wait. 3 hours pass, they should be done by now. Maybe they hid them very well. It's fine darling, someone tells their distressed partner. Maybe they got a little lost, they'll be back soon, someone tells another. No one is here to comfort Mumbo's thoughts though. Where are they? Did they leave him behind and go off to the mystical place they have all been dreaming of and creating in their heads? It was probably his fault, he didn't come, didn't agree, and now they've left him behind to rot in silence. Someone had tried to get Mumbo up, telling him to go home, to sleep. But he couldn't, he needed to stay in case they came out, laughing about the fun they had. He needed to stay, he couldn't be alone again, he needed his friends. Where were they? Bigb went with them too, so he had no friends to talk to. They all left, they cared about him right? They did, they did, they did. Eventually he was pulled away, sent to his house as red and blue lights lit up the forest, people screaming for their children, the cries of younger and older siblings who didn't know what was wrong. --- The days bled together, years passed in a haze, he went to school, did his work, got a sh-tty job washing dishes, which made him feel sick, he didnt have friends, his family didnt really talk to him, he lived alone, and he was happy. But he wasnt. --- “Did you have any conversations with a mysterious man? Or seen any creepy things?” Mambo nods “yes but i didnt th-ink it was worth telling, it was just a small conversation about easter and eggs, he was quite weird now that you mention it”. Joel writes down something in his notebook. “Any characteristics you saw or can remember?” “He was blond, quite tall, he had a hood on so i coulnt see his face, or i did, i dont remember…” “Okay, thank you Mumbo.” Joel stands up, Pearl jumps up with him, talking a mile a minute, Mumbo nodding quietly along.
