Olivia dropped the water jug onto the floor, finally finishing helping Annie with her move-in. Annie walked around the house, looking around. “Why did I never think to live in a house?” Annie called from upstairs before coming back down. Outside, the sun was setting, the ruined city shining beautifully in the red glow. Olivia stopped and looked out the window, not moving, just… thinking. It was crazy what her life had become, how fast it turned around. Oh, how she longed to go back to celebrating her birthday with her mom and dad. Her mind flashed with the image of her mom transforming and killing her dad, and she shuddered before turning back around. Annie was sitting in front of the fireplace, eating a can of beans with a spoon. Olivia grabbed a tin of pineapple and sat criss-cross next to her. ‘So… what happened that got you all alone?” Olivia asked, glancing over at her. “When the bomb fell, I was lucky enough to not be affected by the initial explosion. But when I saw what the mist was doing to people, I just ran. I don't even know if my parents are alive anymore. What happened to you?” Annie asked, glancing over at her. “My, uh, dad got stuck under rubble, and when my mom got infected, she… killed him.” Annie covered her mouth in horror. “Oh my god, I'm so sorry!” Olivia smiled. “It's okay. It was a bit ago… I'll be fine. Can we go to bed now?” Annie nodded and put out the fire, casting the room in darkness. As Olivia snuggled into her sleeping bag, she saw Annie take off her sweatshirt and shirt, the moonlight reflecting off her back as she slept on her side, facing away from Olivia. She felt something hot in her stomach, could feel her cheeks blushing, but she ignored it and closed her eyes, falling into a dark, dreamless slumber.
