That morning, Olivia grabbed her crowbar, and Annie grabbed her crossbow she had found in the store earlier, and they walked outside. Annie's backpack was full of arrows, and as they walked, she would pull them out and practice shooting at random things. Most of her arrows were either way too close or too far, but every once in a while, they hit the target. Annie sighed as she drew back her arrow once again, aiming at a metal can sitting a bit away from the sidewalk. “Why are we walking? Can't we steal a car or something?” She grumbled as she let go of the arrow, managing to hit the can with a plink, before scurrying over to pick up the arrow. Before Olivia could answer her question, Annie yelped and scrambled backwards, leaving her arrow on the ground as she rushed back. Olivia didn't get to ask what had startled her until a mottled, black foot stepped onto the arrow, snapping it in half. Olivia's eyes followed the foot up, past the large legs, the yellow skin stretched tightly against ribs, all the way up to the pitch-black eyes and large, open mouth, with rotting, sharp teeth. It unleashed a howl when it saw the girls and rushed at Annie. She yelped and dodged out of the way, and the creature slammed heavily into a car, shattering the glass. It quickly got to its feet and shook its head before looking back at the girls. It opened its mouth to yell again, but Annie shot an arrow right into its open mouth. It gagged and coughed around the blockage, before managing to cough the arrow out. Now it was angry. It lunged at Olivia, but she dodged, swinging her crowbar. It cracked against its jaw, hard. Annie backed up and shot arrows at it from a distance. It went like that for a few minutes, a dance of death between them. Lunging, chomping, dodging, striking. Annie had gotten some good shots in as Olivia bashed it, weakening it. Until, finally, it fell. Olivia limped over and, with one final swing, crushed its skull. Annie sat on the ground, shivering. Olivia just felt… numb. Her arms were weak from swinging the crowbar; she had multiple bruises and cuts, and everything hurt. She sat next to Annie, and, somehow, their hands found each other, holding onto each other as they looked at the corpse of the monster that was once a human.
