Air in the Common was heavy with summer heat, hanging thick. Then, Magnus felt a tap on his shoulder and jumped, looking over, only to see his elven friend, Hearthstone, standing behind him. [ɢᴜʏs ɪᴍ sᴏ ᴇxᴄɪᴛᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ ᴛʜɪs ʙᴜᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴡᴏɴᴛ ᴡᴏʀᴅ ʜᴇʟᴘ] “Hearth!” Magnus exclaimed loudly, but stopped talking when people around him glanced up from their games. /Come here./ He signed quickly to Hearth, walking up to Floor 19, towards his room. Once they had reached the hallways, away from the watching eyes of other einherjar, Magnus spun to face Hearth. /What are you doing here?/ he signed, confused. Hearth didn’t come to Hotel Valhalla often; non-einherjar needed direct permission from Odin or Helgi to enter. Hearth signed back to Magnus, explaining that he needed Magnus’s help. “What do you need help with?” Magnus asked, signing as he spoke. Protection and cloaking. Before Magnus could launch more questions at Hearth, a voice came from behind them. “What is Hearth doing here? Are you guys starting a club without me?” Alex asked, before hopping over to lean on Magnus. Alex was wearing his usual attire: a long-sleeved white top beneath a short-sleeved green and pink shirt, with green pants and a new pair of Converse. How Alex had gotten a new pair of shoes while in Hotel Valhalla, Magnus did not know. Only Alex could wear bright green and pink and still make it look good. “He needs our help apparently,” Magnus responded. “Sounds fun. What are we doing?” Alex asked Hearth. Hearth paused, thinking how to word his response, before explaining how there was a plant he needed in the world of the humans, Midguard. The plant only bloomed today, and the closest one Hearth could find was in Boston Common. It would be relatively safe if Magnus and Alex could grab it for him today. It had properties that supposedly could supposedly help Hearth’s magic not drain his life force so quickly. “No offence, but why can’t you just grab it? Not that I’m against breaking the rules for a human world visit,” said Alex curiously. Magnus swore he could have seen a pink tint rise on Hearth's cheeks [ʙʟɪᴛᴢsᴛᴏɴᴇ ᴍʏ ʟᴏᴠᴇ-] as he reluctantly explained; Blitz had planned today as his shop’s, /Blitz’s Best’s/, set-up day. Hearth had promised to help carry around clothes and set up shelves. Alex grinned as Hearth signed and agreed to help, saying, “Fine. You and Blitz have fun carrying around musty boxes; me and Maggie will go get your plant.” The boys walked to the tree and got to Midgard. They were in Boston Common now, where Hearth had said the plant would be. As he looked around, though, there was no sign of any magical plants. “Hey Maggie,” Alex began casually. “Did either of us think to ask Hearth what said magical plant would look like?” Magnus looked around for any sign of a plant, embarrassed by this lapse in judgment. “I don't know… I guess I thought it would be… magical looking?” “Oh okay, I’ll let you know when I see a sparkly glowing flower sprouting rainbows playing the harp!” Alex said back, almost disguising his sarcasm. Magnus rolled his eyes. “Let’s just look. If Hearth didn’t tell us what it looked like, he probably knew we would know it when we found it.” Suddenly, a low rumbling of thunder sounded, and a slow, steady drizzle began to fall from the just-sunny sky. “Oh, come on!” Alex said angrily before shouting an ancient Norse swear at the sky that Magnus wasn’t sure how he learned. “Hey!” came a small, indignant voice from the bushes near them. “Don’t use profanity by the plants. You are ruining the garden’s peace!” {cont}
{cont} Magnus turned toward the plants and found a girl, looking about 16, stepping out from under a massive fern. She had skin the color of fresh birch bark and hair that looked like webs of tangled ivy strewn about, twisting down to her waist. Her dress looked as if it was woven of hundreds of small leaves, and she was glaring up at Alex with narrowed eyes the color of rich dirt. Seeing the boy’s confused and slightly alarmed glances, she raised herself up to her full height, admittedly not much, and recited a speech she seemed to have memorized in case it needed to be delivered. “I am Bramble, wood nymph, faithful servant to Gerðr, and protector of the gardens of the /Boston Common/. Any ill intent is unadvised.” “Nice green hair,” Alex said, grinning, ignoring all of Bramble’s spiel. Magnus and Bramble looked at him. “I have green hair too,” he added unhelpfully, pointing to his head with vibrant green curls. “So,” Magnus started, breaking the silence that had followed. “Our friend was looking for a flower he said you had. Could you lead us to it? He said it only blooms once a year, if you know the one he is talking about.” Bramble’s dark eyes lit up, her frustration momentarily forgotten. “You mean the Solfyr blossom! Yes, follow me.” Alex and Magnus followed her through the paths and rows of plants, slowly becoming more soaked, until they reached the edge. Bramble pointed, and there, near the ground, was a small, sad-looking flower. Its petals were a murky gray, and its stem was all but rotted in half. “Looks magical enough to me,” decided Alex after a beat, reaching down to pick up the flower. “Stop!” Bramble cried, right before Alex tugged the flower out of the ground. Magnus tensed, waiting for a larger guardian to erupt from the ground, the plant to explode, or something similar. But nothing happened. Brambled looked at Alex with eyes that seemed to grow stormier by the second. “That flower belonged to the garden,” she said quickly, her voice cracking as she continued. “Gerðr put me in charge of protecting this garden. You ruined it.” Alex looked sheepishly at the small flower wilting in his palm. “I’m sure she won't miss just this one ugly flower. You have so many more,” he said, gesturing to the colorful, bright flowers dotting the yard. “It’s not ugly,” Bramble said tersely. “All the flowers are important to the garden.” Before Alex could respond, Magnus stepped forward and plucked a single petal from the blossom. Bramble paused, confused as Magnus leaned down to put the petal in the ground. He didn’t want to take this plant from Bramble if it meant that her garden was ruined. He closed his eyes and focused on the plant. He had only used his healing powers on flesh before, but the flower was its own life force, so Magnus figured it was worth a try. As he found the lingering life left in the petal, he focused on it, enlarged it, until he felt the plant take root. He opened his eyes and grinned when he saw a new Solfyr plant blooming. Bramble looked at him with wide eyes. “That was the magic of Frey!” she quickly curtsied before saying, “I’m sorry I had no idea I was talking to the son of Mistress’s husband.” Magus realized she was right- Gerðr was Frey’s wife. “Oh, well, we took it. I figured I should put it back,” embarrassed by the rapt attention Bramble was now giving him. Alex, however, had no such reservations. “ Don't mind him; he always turns red when cool girls find him impressive.” Bramble turned red this time, but was distracted from Alex when she looked to the sky. “This shower is about to clear up, and I still haven’t finished my rain-time garden rounds. I really should be going.” After a moment’s consideration, she curtsied again to both Magnus and Alex before running and disappearing into the trees. Alex turned toward Magnus, smiling. “You’re such a show-off. I steal a flower, and you have to go and birth a whole new one just to make her feel better.” Magnus glared at Alex, but the glare had far too little heat behind it to be sparked by real annoyance. “Look!” Magnus said suddenly, pointing to the sky. The pour of rain was fading, and arching across the vast sky was a strip of color. Alex rolled his eyes. “What are you, a seven-year-old?” But he still looked up at the sky where Magnus was pointing and raised his free hand, the one not holding the flower, up to meet Magnus’s. !
