The War Department bought 50 of these chonkers to shunt trains around in military depots and ports, they were also used to bank train up hill. WW2 saw more action from these chonkers. The chonkers would began to double head with military trains and munitions. Some would be sent to the Netherlands, Egypt, and Poland. Many of the War Department Chonkers were destroyed and wrecked. Like many of locomotives used during the war, the remaining chonkers became war surplus, many were scrapped, some were bought back by Sack Lines. Only 5 chonkers in the Netherlands, now reclassed to the NS 9800, are preserved.
