proof of concept about water level and ice: because ice is less dense, it takes up more room per equal mass of water; however, because the combined mass of ice and water remains the same, the water is never displaced. this is shown at the green line, which is calculated from the liquid water's volume and the ice's volume converted to liquid water. what this means is ice floating freely in the ocean would not change the sea level. however, one should be more concerned about glaciers which hold tremendous amounts of ice separate from the oceans. if these melt (and this is becoming near true), it *will* produce noticeable changes in the sea level.
